Too bad you couldn't trap them and at least get them nuetered. The fighting and yowling should stop.

Cookie, I was trying to explain the difference between the small wild species of cats and domestic cats who are feral. To the best of my knowledge we do not have any small wild species of cats here, although the jaguarundi is native to Mexico. It's about the same size as a domestic cat. Perhaps there are some on the mountain. Most of the wild species are shy with humans.

What RevImmigrant posted is what I had heard. But I am no expert about cats, although I have had some 7 rescue cats, some of them old during the last 15 years lakeside.
When I bought the house in 1997, I learned later that the previous owners gave the house cat away to a local couple. That cat ran away, apparently came back to my house, could not get in, and someone threw him in the garbage. Luckily he was discovered and returned to me, by a neighbor who explained all of this to me. He (the cat) lived another two years, before leaving us. After that I learned to appreciate cats, and have rescued two abandoned cats from the street and the others from the shelter.

Manny, you can probably borrow a trap from the Wildlife Rescue, then trap them and take them to the vet for neutering. As noted, neutering generally solves the problem. They usually quit spraying after being neutered too.

Just to bring everyone up to date - and close out this topic - I took the stray cat and had her neutered yesterday; she had gone into heat and I woke up with 3 tomcats sitting out on my patio. The vet said it wasn't the most ideal time to neuter her - but she seems to be recovering just fine.
She is a very sweet cat and hopefully will live outside and kill rodents and earn her keep but not produce any more unwanted kittens. Now I just need to find a name for her.

Way to go Karen. Thank you for taking care of spaying her. I hope a great name will come to you and that she becomes a loved family member.
