I thought you'd like to know that the ticket I got from the motorcycle cop in LaFloresta for driving without a seat belt and then presenting a copy of my driver's license--illegal, as it turns out--cost $788 pesos. With a discount for prompt payment, total came to: $394 p.

Now I always buckle up--instead of now and then--and I'm traveling with the original DL.

I think I'm on the straight on narrow. Thank goodness my crime spree was affordable. It could have been worse.

Sounds like you got off cheap. Seatbelt fines in NM were either 90 or $100US. Not sure what driving without a license costs now.

I am talking about POINTS, not pesos, I know that every drivers licence is worth, for instance....10 points, but, some infractions costs several points that are deducted from the original 10 points....am I right?

All you need is love....

I can't get the MX driving mentality down.

I was trying to get into traffic the other day. Some nice guy waved me in and then passed me going up the hill going west out of Ajijic. Seems to be a blend of politeness and suicide complex.

I was laughing the other day when the point about having to be 18 to have a license came up. I was walking down Hildago when a kid, no more than 12 passed me driving a truck. He was doing great but he was having real problems seeing over the dashboard. I have trouble driving in that area.

There is no point system for Mexican drivers, you get fined and still keep the license.

Someone mentioned bad Mexican drivers. Hey, we have some pretty horrible drivers in the expat community!

I just spoke to a Mexican friend who lives in Ajijic, this evening. Two weeks ago, a woman making a turn off the caratera into La Floresta hit him in his truck with her car. She did not stop at all! Her car must have had damage, so you know who is at fault there. He tried to follow her, but his front bumper was torn and was dragging on the ground. A witness said it was a cream or white colored sedan and he thought it was American plates.

Now my friend, who is not wealthy, has to pay for the damage, he is insured but he has a deductable..... just like the rest of us.

An acquaintance of mine, from a country NOB, backed into a mexican plated parked car and just left without a note or anything. Her justification? Her car had been damaged at Wal Mart so its about time "one of them" got paid back for all the damage "they" do.

Face it folks, as we get older our responses are not as quick. Our eyesight and depth perception are not as good as when we were young. And.... we forget to put on our seat belts! I have made some dumb moves myself. I am glad the OP has a sense of humor and gets that she actually did break a rule.

Actually there are some rules where you can be jailed for multiple offenses within a time period such as speeding

I just spoke with an american friend of mine who lives in Dallas. While shopping at a local market his car was struck. When the other driver got out of his truck (a brand new 2012 Ford 150) turns out he was mexican from SOB, clearly his fault....but he had no insurance, he had no drivers liscence, he was in the US illeagally, My friend of course had to pay the damages, the other person drove away with a big smile on their face. Face it folks you dont have to be old or live in another country, these type of people will find you.

And yet nearly every time I have had a 'near-miss' in this town, it's been from some older age gringo not watching the heck where he or she is going, or thinking that he or she is the only one on the road, or thinking that everyone else will just have to make way for him or her. It happens a lot with elderly drivers in the USA and Canada, too, but for some reason down here it's more severe because the old gringos are adventurous and so, they REALLY don't give a hoot.

Using your seatbelts is a no brainer, it just makes sense to buckle up even if the law is not always enforced. I have been driving for 54 years never got a ticket evenso I would have deserved one sometimes. I like to observe the laws if I drive in Mexico or elsewhere, it makes sense and its good for your health.
