I just had our car done last week at Car City and paid the 400 ps. They do more than just the certification for that, they also check all the fluids and give the car a check to make sure all is in working order so I thought that was worth it for the extra 150 ps.

One thing I found out is that they do not have the stickers anywhere in the Chapala area, they have to send a guy into Guadalajara to a place with your vehicle info to get the actual sticker for the car. Maybe this is why the extra charge as well. Does anyone know if Escalara or any other mechanic actually have the stickers here Lakeside?

I got the fee from Intercasa's driving rules document. There are 12 months of the year, but only 10 digits (0 - 9), so two months had to be left out.

OK guys - you're missing the point. Go through the process. You go out to your car. You look at the license plate, and find the last number on the plate. Let's say your license plate says "TGP 3558". OK, you're an 8. So, what month do you need to renew your sticker? Look at the chart. It says the number 8 corresponds with the month of September. That's when you need to have your sticker renewed.

If you get written up for not having a sticker or an expired sticker, the fee is $100 dollars or so. But if you pay within 10 working days, the fee is cut in half - to around $50 dollars. To me, it's worth the risk of not having it done at all. My guess is that they don't check for these very often. I'll probably be wrong now, having said that. I'll let you know if I get stopped for lack of a sticker. :)

OK, my last number is a "2". But I can go get it now, correct, and will have to get another one next February.

I sure don't need to pay someone 150 pesos to check my car's "fluids." Is there general agreement that the guy in San Antonio is OK and honest?

I'm not really too concerned about it around here, it's those predatory GDL cops who would use this as yet another opportunity for extortion IMO.

It must be remembered that every state in the Republic sets their own rules for automobiles. So what is true in Jalisco is not necessarily true everywhere. It is best to check for what is required for the area you live in. Here, the local “DMV” office is called the Transito office, it is where you renew your drivers license ,it must be renewed every year for a non-citizen here in Morelos, Register any new car, pay any traffic fines, etc.

Here, in Cuernavaca in Morelos state, we are required to get an emissions sticker twice per year, depending on your license plates ending number. Just a way to raise more revenue I think. When we lived in México City, we were required to get a new emissions sticker every six months also.

Check locally for yourself. Here, an emissions check only costs $250 Pesos if you actually have it done. Most auto repair shops will get your sticker for $400 Pesos, you do not need to have your car checked. They will just give you a new sticker the next day.

I drove my last car for ten years with just the original sticker that I got for it, they are not color-coded here. I did get a new sticker for my present car this year, no emissions check. It should be renewed this November. I am debating whether to have it done.

I used to have a handicapped license plate for my last car. I am not sure, but I think a handicapped plate exempts the car from the Hoy No Circula law in México City. I don't drive to México City often, and I always avoided driving there on a Wednesday, according to the ending number on my license plate.

When registering a car for the first time, they will usually ask which day you prefer not to drive in México City. They will then usually give you new license plates with the ending number prohibiting driving there on the day you prefer. I cannot drive there on any Wednesday, or the third Saturday of any month. I don't care. Every chance I get not to go to Mexico City again, I take it. We can get an emissions sticker here in Morelos permitting us to drive in México City on any day for a high extra cost. Not worth it unless you work there, and commute every day. Foreign license plates are not exempt from the Hoy No Circula law in México City.

I cannot get a handicapped plate for my new car. I was injured in the military over 50 years ago, and I no longer have any documentation concerning my injury. When I got my first handicapped plate, they just wanted to see a scar. Now, they want documents. Every person with gray hair is allowed to park in a handicapped space here anyway.

What can I say other thank you all for your great information. I just printed out article 168 and when I get back to Mexico I will immediately get my inspection. I had no idea the fine could be so high but with the article there is a solution should I be ticketed

You are describing the Car City ripoff. CAR CITY does not have the stickers, probably because they are not really licensed to do the check and have to have someone else issue the hologram. The other certified shops here - Escalera and the one in San Antonio have the stickers and are legit.

Spencer,
Am I reading this right....is it saying that if you get a ticket for not having the emissions sticker, but then comply and get the emissions sticker within 15 days, that the fine is totally waived??

I was quite concerned myself until i read that part of Spencer's post. I made a copy of same and highlighted that part of the message in Spanish so that I can show it to someone, if he pulls me over.

As always Spencer, thank you very much for your great posts filled with very helpful information.

We had our vehicle emission tested in Riberas at Escalera today. They informed us foreign plated vehicles all are due in January each year. Mexican plated cars are based on the last number in their license plate. The fee paid was $250 pesos.

In 2009, the last time I got one before this Saturday, and they told me I had to come sometime around June each year, I don't remember exactly, because of the number on my Texas plated car.

I have no idea if the rules have changed.
