happy jackson Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 I'm just starting to write a new book about a man whom I respect and admire. He is Salvador of Tio Domingos Restaurant. I'm attaching a link to my blog re the book. I hoping that some of you may have some interesting stories about Salvador or a dining experience at the restaurant that you might like to share. If so, please pm me. http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/2530845-salvador-of-tio-domingos
vetteforron Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 This is just a little bit more than a little hot for me! Good luck with your book.
saintmartin Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 Salvador is a remarkable person. He can tell you the entire history of Ajijic ! He is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. He also knows a lot...I mean a lot about native Mexican plants...of all kinds....and will help you with any garden questions you might have. He is a real treasure to know.
happy jackson Posted June 4, 2012 Author Report Posted June 4, 2012 Salvador really needs business. His out of the way location, without any sembalance of location location location, is out of sight and out of mind. He and his family are an Ajijic original. When you're hungrary, think Tio Domingos. Remember, closed Wed and Thurs.
Carolina Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 For about 10 months now, I've lived only about 3 blocks from his restaurant, and I've never eaten there, so I'm really glad to have read these posts and to hear so many positive comments about Salvador and his restaurant. It is a little-known location, but I'll be getting myself over there for sure now.

ChrisB Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 He is also an expert on exotic Mexican cuisine from all over the country. A group of us often went there for Sunday lunch and sometimes he would prepare one of these unusual dishes for us. He is a sweet and charming man.
HelperGuy Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 He told me at great length, with much passion one day about how to make real Sopa Azteca, using Epazote, which most places don't do. It was quite a story, and I wish I could recount it for you, but perhaps going to the source is even better.
happy jackson Posted June 6, 2012 Author Report Posted June 6, 2012 His Chile Rellenos have no match in town... Seems we order those regualarly but last week had his Camarones, media diablo. Beware of camarones diablo, media about blew the socks off my wife but the flavor is wonderful, The plate had about 15 shrimp and the price was only 90 pesos. Remember he's closed Wed and Thurs.
crjd Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 It's been a number of years since we've visited Tio Domingo Restaurant on Ocampo just opposite La Huerta development. Salvador is everything that other's have described and there is absolutely no doubt that he and his family are talented in the food department. Salvador's freely offered knowledge of Lakeside's development over the years was always an interesting aside to visiting the restaurant. Right now, it might be a great opportunity for the restaurant to post their current menu offerings and their hours. If we and our friends ever had a complaint about Tio Domingo it was simply that the menu never changed and the same daily specials appeared week after week, year in and year out and Salvador always tried hard to push that daily special regardless of how repetitive it might have been. The daily specials were always offered on the same day of the week and for many people who have the habit of going out on the same days of the week, after a while, "ham steak with pineapple sauce" gets to be pretty boring. I have not heard anyone mention the restaurant in quite a number of years but it does at least say something in that they've now been there about 14 years. Since they live on the same property it's really hard to know if they are actually doing well or just surviving. These are far tougher times than a few years ago. Another restaurant, in close proximity to Tio Domingo, that finally gave up the ghost a while back was the artist Javier Ramos'restaurant on Rio Zula just opposite "Sol y Luna" between Ocampo and the Careterra. It was an attractive restaurant/art gallery that survived for a good number of years but, looking back, there seems to be a consensus that it also "died" because the menu never changed. People simply got bored!
HelperGuy Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 Salvador changed his menu last year, finally.
lauren Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 Will someone please post directions to Tio Domingo's? I don't think I've ever driven past it, or if I have, didn't notice it. If I knew how to get there, I would definitely give it a try.
crjd Posted June 7, 2012 Report Posted June 7, 2012 Take the Careterra west to Tio Domingo (street) which runs south towards the lake. When you turn off the Careterra the Taverna dei Quattro Mori Italian restaurant in Plaza de la Huerta will be on your left. (That plaza actually backs onto La Huerta condominium development on Ocampo. (Ocampo is the western continuation of Constitucion, where, in the centre of Ajijic, at the intersection of Colon/Morelos, the name changes.) So, when you travel south on Tio Domingo and get to Ocampo, turn left and Tio Domingo restaurant is right there on the right immediately opposite the entrance to La Huerta. If you don't have a car, walk west on Ocampo from the centre of Ajijic until you get to the town cemetery. If you arrive at the cemetery and you're still breathing then turn around and walk back a block and a half and Tio Domingo Restaurant will be on your right.
happy jackson Posted June 7, 2012 Author Report Posted June 7, 2012 I can only hope that the many people who've now been reintroduced to Tio Domingos will stop in for a lunch or dinner. i remember when I first saw posts for the restaurant the only critic was, Service can be a 10 or a 4, depending on how busy he is. He's the only waiter, his, over 6 foot 250 lb son is the bartender and his wife, another son and daughter in-law are the kitchen cooks. The early posts said, if you're not in a hurry, the food will not dissapoint. I can add to that, saying, the ambiance makes my wife and I just enjoy kicken back and letting the world go by. A reminder, I started this topic by saying I was writing a book about Salvador. i now spend time, letting him tell his stories into my voice recorder. i again encourage any one with a interesting, funny, sad, or other story to either post here or pm me. I can now tell you, I've finished the first 2 pages of this book and I think it's beginning will surprise everyone.
Carolina Posted June 8, 2012 Report Posted June 8, 2012 An alternate note on directions, and especially if you don't drive or don't want to make the long walk: The smaller bus heads west thru downtown Ajijic on Zaragoza. It's a great, bumpy ride, and when I feel like I'm most assimilated into the Mexican culture! Stay on that bus (not the big bus that only stays on the Carretera), heading west along Zaragoza. Enjoy checking out the neighborhoods! Get off at Rio Bravo, just after passing the front of the very large Danza del Sol Hotel. Walk a block to Ocampo, turn right, and Tio Domingo's Restaurant is up about 1-1/2 blocks on your left, across from the La Huerta gated development.
Conchita Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 We just took a group of 21 for dinner on Wednesday - they opened up just for us. The service was great, as they were hustling to keep everyone in drinks. They were smart to offer 6 great-sounding dishes to choose from (rather than the entire menu), and they managed to get the meals out in a VERY reasonable amount of time and even fairly close to each other. Every single person said his/her meal was delicious, with ample portions. The prices are moderate also. Unfortunately, we didn't have much chance to visit with Senor Salvador, but my husband and I will definitely go back soon.

catinmex Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 Went there for supper last night and had a lovely experience. Salvador is absolutely delightful. Husband had the Spanish Coffee for an after dinner dessert drink and he said it was the best one he's had in 30 years. We will definitely go back.
Mainecoons Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 Does he have outdoor seating for the smokers? I don't smoke but a group of us get together for dinner weekly and several do, so we generally sit outdoors. Closed Wednesdays and Thursdays, correct? What are the opening hours the rest of the week? Definitely want to give this a try.
Guest RevImmigrant Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 I've been there and yes, there is outdoor seating for us smokers. Thank you for being considerate of your smoking friends. I quit going to the ladies' Sunday lunch group that several of my friends go to over a year ago because one member, who is an ex-smoker, decreed all of a sudden without any warning or discussion by the group that it was a non-smoking group. The food at Tio Domingo's was good when I was there.
happy jackson Posted July 5, 2012 Author Report Posted July 5, 2012 Keeping in mind this post began with my telling you I was writing a book about Salvador. I've also been doing my darndest to help promote his family's great restaurant in the process. Should that be working, I'm certain Salvador and his family will be apprecitive. I am still in need of any interesting stories any of you may remember that occured while you were at the restaurant. If it was funny, sad, crazy or whatever, just so it made it a memorable night. Please let me know Should you have been at the dinner they held to empty the restaurants supplies before closing their doors years ago, I would love to have you pm me or post your memories of that event here. For those of you not knowing what I'm talking about. The family thought they were broke and going out of bussiness but on the night of the dinner, people generously ponied up enough money to allow them to continue in business and that was many years ago. Great community we live in isn't it! Just another reason I love living here.
happy jackson Posted July 5, 2012 Author Report Posted July 5, 2012 Re smoking, I don't believe he has any restrictions but I can't confirm that. He has a beautiful outside courtyard as well as multiple tables inside the restaurant so unless restricted by law, I'm confident you could smoke outside.
Ron Jackson Posted July 21, 2012 Report Posted July 21, 2012 Four of my favorite things at Tio's 1. Chili Rellenos best in town 2. Chicken burrito, great sauce 3. Shrimp media diablo 4. Bananans foster, prepared table side Margarita's served in small glass but would like twice as big in a big glass with ice added. 30 pesos
