Here is the most recent CSI letter re: Wednesday evening's Town Meeting on the plaza, received shortly before midnight. They asked that we post it to our contacts:

Dear Community Members,
Today at the La Floresta Auditorium our local police chief, Capitan Contreras, and Jalisco State Police Chief, Commander Marquez, set the record straight. The information was so calming; we asked if they would speak to the community. They were so please to have the opportunity.
Therefore CSI Chapala has scheduled a “TOWN HALL MEETING” to be held at the Ajijic Plaza, Wednesday, May 16th at 6pm. PLEASE make every effort to attend this very important, information-packed meeting.
What many members of the community and CSI learned today was calming and it will be well worth your time to attend this important meeting. The Commander and Capitan will speak, using microphones and loud speakers. Additionally, they will entertain questions not answered in their speeches for about one half hour.
By the time you leave this very important meeting you will have learned:
  • how many deaths have there been in our community;
  • about the new bodies discovered in Riberas;
  • about the flyers/banners you may have heard about calling for more random innocents’ deaths;
  • about the “safety houses” raided;
  • about those arrested and how the police (both State and Local) and the Army are handling the security of our community.
CSI will also have available for you refrigerator magnets and phone stickers with the cell phone police numbers of the officers working your neighborhoods, should you need immediate help. We will also have Neighborhood Watch window stickers to show neighborhood solidarity.
PLEASE get this information out to your email lists – as well as your Mexican neighbors and friends. This information is in Spanish on our Facebook Pages: CSI Chapala AND ISC Chapala.
We need your attendance. These are the most important and tragic events our Chapala community has had to deal with in its recent history. Please support CSI’s efforts to bring you the latest information and stop the rumors.
Thank you,
CSI Chapala

For those who live in the Jocotepec muncipality -

This Thursday morning, May 17th at 10 am, the President of Jocotepec will be holding a special meeting about security at Restaurante Viva Mexico in San Juan Cosala. Augustin would like all concerned residents to plan to attend this very important meeting. He hopes for a large ex-pat presence so please pass this information along to other people you may know of who live in the area

And for those that want information about reporting information or crimes, the facebook page Por Una Riberas sin Violencia has provided information about reporting to the Army and Navy and recommends bypassing local authorities.

There were 4 people in my exercise class today who don't feel comfortable attending, because they could be targeted by the bad guys who could be in attendance, out in the open.

I am not going because the reality is that the authorities don't have answers and can't inform us of anything we can't find out elsewhere. They will try to reassure us and it will all be for naught. Nobody knows what is going to happen from day to day and nobody knows who is on whose side. I'll stay home with a copa of my own koolaid.

What horrible times. We're all afraid and I understand. I won't be attending either as it's just too big a target.This area seems to be too small for any real protection long term so I don't see what they can do. I don't doubt for a second that the "bad guys" are reading these boards, joining other groups and boards and gaining a lot of information about us. That's just too scary for my liking.

I read in El Informador today that they have several people in custody - all with the typical gang knicknames - related to the recent events. And they've busted 3 houses (not in this immediate area) with drugs and weapons caches. So I assume this will be the "reassuring" information they'll be giving at the meeting. However, I'm not too reassured, it's probably just a drop in the bucket.

This is really confusing. Thought crime wasn't supposed to be discussed on this Board. Wonder how long it will take for even notices of meetings about crime to be wiped off ?

I don't know where to begin. I attended (and posted) about the first last minute meeting Monday. Linda Fosse, Kim from #4 and others were in attendance.

Because of their work to keep our community safe and to dispel rumors they had the Chief of Police agree to address the community and to dispel rumors and explain what has happened, what they are doing.

I have lived here 14 months and am so tired of hearing how people do not want to get involved. So much for a close knit caring community!

What the heck is wrong with you people?

If you say you love Lakeside, PROVE IT and attend. Many of you did attend the last time we gathered in mass. Linda and others are trying their best to keep our Lakeside area safe and happy. Don’t you want this community to thrive instead of living in fear with rumors abound?

The Police Chief comes with his own military entourage. We will all be watched and protected. You have just as much chance of having a problem at this meeting as you do driving to the airport or Sorianos. Yes, I know we can’t change City Hall. We can, however, make a friend with the Chief and get as much information he can or will tell us. Nothing is perfect. GET INVOLVED!
This is not a crime posting, this is a posting in reply to a Civic Gathering Posting.

Our feelings, exactly. We are not going either. Not taking the chance. Too much on edge.

Many of us have been here more than 14 months and have attended multiple meetings. So really, I don't think there is anything wrong with us. Look over the last 3 or 4 meetings like this, and come up with some positive results - other than the group feel good factor. By positive results, I mean some difference in the community that has reduced crime or resulted in imprisonment.

And of course the question - who are "you people" - does that include my mexican neighbor? But have you talked to her - or other mexicans. I would guess they would burn your ear off if you asked them why "you people" weren't going to go. I have read many articles that the police were not responsive when people reported kidnappings and missing people. Here is one - http://www.proceso.com.mx/?p=307550 You surely don't think they are going to go, do you?

And I realize the post will be deleted, or the thread locked - but just had to add my two cents

There is no problem with this discussion. Please keep it informative, not wandering off topic and not fighting with each other. This is information the community should know.

Here is my hope. I hope they don't spend ANY time discussing property values! It was embarrassing last meeting that the majority of the time was spent on gringo property value. It came across as arrogant. Please, no repeat of that. This should be about how to increase our (Mexican & gringo) safety, and the facts as far as we will get them.

I took my Mexican maid with me to the first meeting as she is very interested in security issues in the area as her family has been personally involved in robberies on buses and her sons have been roughed up by the police here. She asked me to leave after about 25 minutes when she understood that the meeting wasn't going to help her a bit. It certainly didn't address any of the issues here in Riberas where we live where there are no boots on the ground. How much graver are the problems now? Exponentially.

And who are we told to call when we suspect a crime? Not the police but rather the military. So why a meeting with the head of police?

For those that think law enforcement is doing anything. Lately the policia have patrolled my neighborhood at numerous times of the day ,night and early mornings. Local, State and Federal unmarked trucks are involved. Just now 4 unmarked Federale trucks dove by with a young male tight up in back. It sounds like where they went they were not allowed to enter and they broke in. sounds like a bust to me!
