Anyone have a recommendation for the best place to buy tools? I'm looking for a skill saw, sander, etc. with at least a DeWalt quality. Are there Mexican brands of this quality? Who has the best prices?

My experience is Mexican brands are not the same quality as DeWalt or Makita etc... although every once in a while you can run across a Truper product that is rebranded from a medium quality maker. Home Depot has a reasonable selection of hand power tools from the US. Prices are higher than the US and of course they don't have the super sale prices or specials we are used to up north but at least today they are available unlike just a decade ago when finding quality tools at any price was the 'holy grail' here.

I sold all my woodworking tools when I sold my home stateside and moved to Mexico.
I thought I would just re-buy everything new once I arrived here in Mexico. (my tools were showing some age anyway)
After looking at available tools at Home Depot, Sears, local 'ferreterias', I found I could shop for powertools on Amazaon.com,
and most items included free shipping (in the USA). I had them shipped to my private courier (La Conexion) in Laredo, TX. My courier then shipped the items
to me in San Miguel. Even after paying the 17% aduana and La Conexion's handling charges, the items were still cheaper than
if I had purchased locally at Home Depot. PLUS I was able to get exactly what I wanted! (Home Depot's selection left a lot to be desired).

I'd price things both ways.

Also, it's ironic that most DeWalt , Porter Cable power hand tools are made in Mexico but are more expensive in Mexico than the US. Go figure,.

The best decision we made was to bring the tools. Even scaffolding, just cannot believe how often we have used that. For acquisition we have also used Amazon and had them brought here. We have also trolled thru the main roads of Guadalajara and stopped in the many, many, many tool stores there. Best selection but pricey were those stores located in Telaquepaque area and Zapopan, which you would expect because of the demographics.

Not sure of the BEST place or prices to buy, but you can find DeWalt, Makita, and Milwaukee tools right here Lakeside. Lots of the Ferretera's carry them including Amuito, next to Guad Pharmacy Ajijic, the Ferretera that used to be ACE Hardware going into Chapala from Ajijic on the Left side, also the Small store across from Soriana's in Chapala.

I think I've just stopped kicking myself for leaving my tools NOB but we'll see about that, maybe there's a kick or two left. At least, I LEFT them, not sold them, so eventually I can go back and get them.
Thanks, halcon, I'll be adventurous and take your advice. Sounds kinda fun. The tool prices in the ferreterias are scary. $200 for a Dewalt skill saw!
Thanks, everyone for your input.

There is an import tool store in Guadalajara, right beside Ripley's Museum, in the centro near the big cathedral. They carry all kinds of tools and power tools, which last at least as long as Black&Decker. And the prices are rock-bottom. I got the best pair of optically-coated binoculars there for 1/4 the price, an excellent telescope, some terrific knives, a quality set of jeweller's screwdrivers for laptop work, and several good power tools. If you are police or military, you can also buy weapons there.

The ONLY firearms store in Mexico is in Mexico City on an Army base. There are several stores that sell ammo and accessories.

Bulnes on Av. LaPaz (I think) in Guadalajara was where my late husband used to buy his tools. They have the best brands, including Bosch. I don't remember them being particularly expensive for the quality and selection.

Once again, sir, you are incorrect. Automatic weapons, rifles, handguns, bows/arrows. All on display in the front window. General public no can buy.

Not me but you are. Those are display pieces only and not for sale. Only the Mexican Army sells firearms and only in Mexico, D.F.. Do your research. Hint: start with the Constitution. Here's a primer: http://en.wikipedia....itics_in_Mexico

And you know this for a fact at this store, do you? Then why when I am in there do I see police buying weapons? And why would two staff there tell me I cannot buy them, but police and military can? Do your own research.
