If so, then my question is ... does anyone know why now, or when to expect them? Days of the year, time of day, etc. Or is it just ... whenever someone feels like it?

But, on the other hand, cohetes can be heard whenever someone feels like it!

I knew about Labour Day and wondered if we'd hear rockets then (no); had no idea about Santa Cruz.
What I would love -- and this might be asking too much -- is a list of 'possible cohete holidays', so I know which days I should not expect to get any sleep.

Why is it so easy to get gun powder to make fire crackers in Mexico when it is so hard to get a gun. The logic escapes me.

Most fiestas do not go 9 days.
9 has a special meaning for catholics. http://www.drstandle..._novenas.shtml.
Nine days of public or private prayer for some special occasion or intention. Its origin goes back to the 9 days that the Disciples and Mary spent together in prayer between Ascension and Pentecost Sunday.
9 month pregnancy, Jesus died on the 9 th day.
Can anyone add more examples?

I am sure the correct spell is "cohete", and that we all mexicans say it wrong. But as it says, in Rome....
BTW a nice article about cuetes:
