Yes, as long as you have adequate internet speed. Is the new Magic Jack quality and reliability good enough that Vonage would not be needed? I need a connection good enough to do business with the States -- lengthy calls.

It sounds like NetTalk is worth trying. Price for the original unit is the same as for MJ; MJ offers $20/year when you buy five years. NetTalk has a wireless version, which means it can be used in hotels where you only have wireless access. However, you do need a computer to set up the wireless, which to me makes a wireless advantage negligible when travelling. Other considerations would be comparing international calling rates, and the stated quality of cell calls.
My suggestion would be to look at NetTalk. Magic Jack requires the computer to be on where nettalk works more like Vonage and plugs into the router. If you take a trip and bring your laptop you can plug nettalk duo into your laptop and it works fine. Same price as Magic jack. Having used both, Nettalk seems to connect to cell numbers cleaner than Magic Jack. The are available at walMart in the US, don't know about Canada. I think you can keep your number with them also. Check out the website www.nettalk.com
I was fortunate that I got mine back when they were brand new so I got a deal for $100usd for life. Or as long as the unit is working. Going on 3 years now without problems.
Just an FYI, all the VOIP systems can call other VOIP numbers anywhere in the world as long as the number called are US or Canadian. I call VOIP numbers here lakeside with no charges. Same as Skype.

When I first got it, there was a voice delay and some of the talked words were losts in the delay. The past 6 months or so the MagicJack has quality of the communication has improved tremendously and I no longer have a voice delay. Yes, the old MagicJack has to be connected to the computer and the computer has to be on.
The new MagicJack Plus just came out a few months ago. IF you have the old MagicJack and get the new Plus, you loose any time you have paid for with the old MagicJack.

When I am not home and my computer is off I get messages and call back.
I travel and take my netbook and MJ with me. I plug in the netbook anywhere there is wifi and I am all set.
I thought about getting the new MJ but don't want to worry about plug-prong adaptors to use it and the computer.
