I'm curious: you can't register a Magic Jack without getting a number. Are you sure? There is a number displayed at the top of the MJ window. We use our MagicJack to call out of Mexico to both the USA and Canada.... no charge at all. Not sure about incoming calls as we never did get a number for our MagicJack phone.

But... if you don't have a phone number, people from home (Canada and the US) can't call you for free. Correct?Bought in Canada..... no number was issued or appears. We can call USA/Canada/Mexico/Central America with this phone for one year FREE and then we have to register again.

Your Majic Jack number appears at the top of the dial pad on your log in.If you don't know your MagicJack phone number, try calling someone who has caller ID. The number will appear on their caller ID.

I have Vonage and just looked at the Magic Jack web site. It says I can keep my Vonage number and can receive and call the US at no charge. My vonage number was my cell phone number in the US and I have to keep that number. I would love to save the money but will have to do more research. Any suggestions or verifications on Magic Jack?
My suggestion would be to look at NetTalk. Magic Jack requires the computer to be on where nettalk works more like Vonage and plugs into the router. If you take a trip and bring your laptop you can plug nettalk duo into your laptop and it works fine. Same price as Magic jack. Having used both, Nettalk seems to connect to cell numbers cleaner than Magic Jack. The are available at walMart in the US, don't know about Canada. I think you can keep your number with them also. Check out the website www.nettalk.com
I was fortunate that I got mine back when they were brand new so I got a deal for $100usd for life. Or as long as the unit is working. Going on 3 years now without problems.
Just an FYI, all the VOIP systems can call other VOIP numbers anywhere in the world as long as the number called are US or Canadian. I call VOIP numbers here lakeside with no charges. Same as Skype.

This is, thankfully, no longer true: MagicJack Plus does not require a computer, only an Internet connection. My suggestion would be to look at NetTalk. Magic Jack requires the computer to be on where nettalk works more like Vonage and plugs into the router.
In my experience, MJ is only poor quality when something it wrong with it (outside of low-speed Internet), so when you replaced the MJ, you got rid of the problem. I myself had one go bad early on, along with several customers.I used to not like MJ as most people that had it often had poor quality calls.
