This from a down-thread soliciting attendees for an SAT get together:

"The fight with the padre of San Antonio is heating up. It is classifiedas a human rights issue (Article24 of the mexican constitution) and will be pursuing that avenue of attack. Anyone know a good human rights attorney???"

What is this about, anybody know? My Mexican neighbors asked me if I was involved in this yesterday.

I believe this is about an interesting new "noise" that has been waking me up on the weekends. The priest is droning his holy material from the church on a loudspeaker system. It's loud and it's long; I can hear it in Chula Vista all the way from the plaza in SAT.

An acquaintance, a Mexican citizen, kind of lost it in church the other day with the priest over this. He says he will stop if it's the will of the people, but of course so far he's not believing their will. Residents in the area, Mexicans, are not happy about this at all. Years back, another priest did the same thing, and never got stopped, but eventually he moved on to another parish.

This is not a typical local thing, like fireworks, bells, and fiestas. One interesting comment was that the intonations reminded a friend of how relaxed it felt to be back in Iran... .

Well that explains this loud droning noise I've been hearing in the early morning up in Chula Vista. It's my clue that it's time to shut the southern windows before the sun hits them. I can only imagine what it must be like if you live close to the church.

I also thought it was the padre, because that is exactly what it sounds like. But, I have discovered that it is actually a vehicle with loudspeakers driving around selling something (maybe religion?). It starts very early, and it is very faint, slowly it gets louder, louder, louderuntil it's unbearable...and then the guy drives by in front of my house.

A wireless speaker "carrying the message"???

It is the priest in San Antonio in this case. You may be hearing the junk guy in his truck, giving the same rap over and over every day.

Hmm, maybe I can hire this guy to park on the street in front of this nightclub masquerading as a restaurant on my street. He could drown out the truly bad overamplified and mascerated gringo music this place emits every week. This might solve both our neighborhood nuisance problem and San Antonio's problem at the same time.

If it's the priest, he'll probably do just fine too. Anyone got a phone number? :)

An update from San Antonio. The cura in Chapala is the superior of the padre in San Antonio. The cura told the padre that he cannot continue to broadcast the rosario. Am hoping that it has ended. Never wanted it to escalate into parishioner vs. parishioner with each side gathering signatures, etc.
