When taking the new highway exiting from the airport to Zapotlanejo, where is the exit going to the toll road for Lagos de mareno? Is it just before the arch into Zap. and does it lead directly to the highway/toll road?

Oatsie has excellent directions with pictures. This is definitely the way to go to Lagos via Zapotlanejo. You completely avoid Guadalajara all together!

Watch out for predatory cops on the first section of that road who will pull you over on a pretext and extract money from you or even steal stuff (a camera), as they did with us. There was quite a spate of this before the first of the year. Haven't seen any reports lately but if you are pulled over by them, insist on going to the station. Do not unlock your car or let them in it.

It's really pretty simple. Take the FIRST exit past the airport exit as you are going north. It is marked to Zapotlanejo. You will go 6.8 miles on this road and as you near the end, where they are constructing a big overpass of some sort, you will see signs directing you to exit for Zapotlanejo. Take this exit, it is a long exit ramp, about 1/2 mile. At the end, go right and that puts you up on libre Mex 80. Stay on this road through varying conditions until you approach Zapotlanjo, you'll pass through a built up area outside of it. When you come to the final set of twin overhead bridges, you will see the entry gate of Zapotlanejo in front of you. Just after you pass under the second bridge, there is a poorly marked entry ramp to that road on your left. Take it, it puts you up on a short stretch of main road that leads directly to the cuota. You'll see signs for a right hand exit onto the cuota taking you towards Lagos de Moreno. Take this exit and you're on the toll road headed north.

Coming back, it is a little trickier. You have to exit the toll road following the signs to Zapotlanejo using a very tricky and somewhat dangerous left hand exit. As soon as you exit under the bridge, you are reversing onto the toll road headed back to Lagos de Moreno. You must immediately cross the two lanes of traffic to get to the right hand side where the exit towards Zapotlanejo is. If you survive this, you go past a large shopping center with its own exit and after that, the exit that puts you back on libre Mex 80 headed back towards GDL. Right after you pass the prison and the traffic light you are going to exit back onto the first road, going around a large circle (staying left do not exit) which will point you back towards the airport. I believe if you follow the signs for the airport at this point you will end up going the right way.

Again, be aware that there have been a number of robberies of gringo (and I am told Mexican) motorists on this road particularly during very early hours by people who either are police (one group was identified as driving a Tonala police vehicle) or masquerading as police. They may stop you with a false accusation of a traffic violation or they may claim to be looking for drugs and guns. If you drive this road, make sure you have carefully concealed your trip money and valuables and are carrying only a token amount of money.

The road is a time saver but it does have its hazards.

One slight adendum. Coming back you can take the turn by the shopping center and it will take you directly to the main road. We took this road twice last weekend and had no problems. It probably depends on the time of day as to how much time you will save, morning or afternoon Guad traffic is usually heavy so it's nice to miss that. It's only slightly less distance wise. Though it is also nice to skip a toll booth (43p). We travel to Jalostotitlan at least once a month and this has become my favorite route.

What don't you understand? It's just that you don't have to go past the shopping center to get to 80, just turn right at the sign for the shopping center.

Correct. You can take the shopping center exit, which is the very first one, and then turn left on their service road which takes you out to Mex 80. Either one works fine.
