Just wanted to let people know about one of the shrimp vendors in the Wednesday Market. He is the first one as go down the street, and is on the right hand side, usually with his son (?).

He has been caught by several people, shorting the weight of your purchase. He weighs out one kilo, in front of you, and asks if you want ice. Of course we do. He then turns his back to get the ice and removes a couple of handfuls of shrimp. I took a pass on him last week, and instead went to the next vendor down the street, also on the right hand side, quite a way down. This husband and wife team sold me one kilo, and it was really one kilo. When I got home and counted the shrimp, I had a good 25 more than the other guy. Week after week, it all adds up. I will be giving my business to the husband and wife shrimp vendors, from now on.

WOW! So sorry to hear this. They have always been generous to overly generous with us! I weigh them when I get home (without the ice) and have always had more than 1 kilo.

I hope this doesn't happen to others.

Thanks for the note. I will continue to buy from him as I like the taste of his shrimp but I'll make sure to check the weight each time and if there is ever an underage, I will tell him the following week.

Valerie :)

25 shrimps seems to be a lot of shrimps like 1/2 of a kilo and depending of the size of course, sounds like you were getting half of what you paid for.

Thanks for the Heads up.

Why wait till the following week? I would do this at the time I was shopping: after he weighs it the first time, have him put the shrimp in the bag for you instead of leaving it in the scale. Then ask him to add some ice. If he is tricky enough to take some out of the bag before he adds the ice, ask him to give you the ice separately--after you have paid for the shrimp. And if he asks why, mention to him that you have heard a complaint about honest weight.

Yes that first guy on the way down the Tianguis saying "San Blas, San Blas" does not have his shrimp on ice. We bought from him one time and the shrimp were so salty (we did not add salt) we could hardly eat them. Go down to the end of the Tienguis and the man on the right has flash frozen shrimp, always delicious. He also has a store on the second floor of the permanent merdado in Chapala.

I also have never been shorted, and they have always been generous.

I noticed with that first shrimp vendor that, when I asked and paid for LARGE size shrimp, I got a mixture of large, medium and small. I don't know if this is typical? Or was this a way of shorting me?

BTW - we no longer buy from the last veggie dealer on the left, near the bottom of the tianguis. Twice they've waaaay overcharged me -- like, 10 pesos for 2 plum tomatoes (I protested, and he reluctantly gave me a few pesos back).

Unfortunately, seems like Buyer Beware applies everywhere....

Alot of the vendors, have two prices, one for Mexicans and one for foreigners..when I send my house keeper, she seems to bring home alot more than I get, I buy the same things every week so I know the price differences...and the difference adds up by the year...

FYI...if you like the large cocktail shrimp, we have been able to get them from the man upstairs at the Mercado in Chapala...they keep them in the freezer so you have to ask for them. They are great on the grill...

I dislike peeling and deveining shrimp, so I buy my camarones limpio at the Pesdacoria Playas. Two locations, one a few doors west of Super Lakes and the other on the south side of the carretera, just west of Colon in Ajijic.

I was really impressed a while back when the fish vendor close to Super Lake steamed the shrimp and made a point of telling me that he used bottled water.
