I have a couple coming to see us in Ajijic but first they are going to stay in Mexico City for 3 dyas. Can anyone recommend tour and hotel for them? The hotel preferably near the airport as they will be flying in and out.

I am not worried about the narco violence and I do not have my head in the sand.
Thanks for the help.

I'd recommend staying at The Red Tree House, a bed and breakfast in the wonderful Condessa neighborhood; the cost of taxi from airport to the B&B was 110 pesos, as I recall. We stayed 4 nights and found the city easy to navigate; we used the subway for all the 'tourist' sites, used cabs a few times (they are very safe and cheap) and for dinner, we walked to many delightful restaurants.

The staff at the B&B is extraordinarily helpful, regarding how to get to places, when to go, etc. All you need is a Fodors, Frommers, etc. guide...there's so much to see we will return this fall for another round. FYI: before we got there, we were prepared to pay for a tour, but after talking with fellow B&B guests, we realized it wasn't necessary. Every morning at breakfast and most evenings at wine time, all the guests shared where they went the day before and the hosts of the B&B offered their insider info, too.

Here are links to the B&B's website and to reviews of it on tripadvisor.com

If they want to reserve at The Red Tree House, they need to do it quickly. The B&B is often sold out--it's by far the best one in the city. The airport is a quick cab ride from there.

I often give tours of the city and would be happy to talk with you about what your friends would like. And I live literally around the corner from The Red Tree House!

The b and b would have been perfect for my guests but I have already phoned and they are full for the dates. But I will remember for the future.
So if anyone else has another b and b options I would appreciate it?
Has anyone taken a Mexcio City tour around the city?
Has anyone taken a tour of the Pyramids of Tehuacan?

A friend who came from San Diego for our wedding stayed here and says it is her new go-to hotel in Mexico City:

Happy feet, I don't think it's possible to take a tour all around Mexico City--it's just too big. If you contact me by PM, I can design a specific tour for your friends that will incorporate the things that interest them most and are most do-able in a day or two days. And PS, the pyramids just to the north of the city are "Teotihuacán".

You do not need t take a tour to see the ruins, take a cab to the bus station Norte abd the terminal for Teotihuacan is there. They can hire a guide for the visit there.
The ruins and Museum at Templo Mayor are very interesting and they are just by the Zocalo.
There are lots of tours offered by hotels. The city have the buses you can hop in and out of to see the city, you can hire cabs and other drivers to take you around.
You can also take the subway.

I think anyone who hired More Liana for a custom tour would be the luckiest tourists in all of DF!

Mexico City is a wonderful city and we discovered, after mucho planning and research, the very best way to see the sites is to get on the city double decker tour buses. There are two lines, a red and a blue with a detailed map of all the stops. You buy your pass for the day which is about 120 pesos, a little more on weekends, and you can get on or off at any stop. There is an audio in English with good descriptions. You can get a guide once at the many of the sites. I really think this the most time efficient and cost savvy way to get to know Mexico City.

My friends now have, a hotel booked, a day trip to the pyramids, they will use the bus line and metro and a possible private guide all arranged by chapala.com.
Thanks to all.

I did hire her and it was really a great value. I learned so much!!

If I would do it again, I would hire Christina the first day and ask her to teach me how to use the subway and buses. There is so much to see in that City and it is really great having someone show you the ropes.

Thank you all for the great comments. And traderspoc, if you saw and enjoyed 'most of the sites' in Mexico City in seven days, two thumbs up to you. I figure it will take me the rest of my natural life to do what you accomplished in a week--and I live here.
