3G is off. Cellular data is off. Personal Hotspot is off. Notifications are off. Location services are off.
Anyone else having this experience? Does anyone know how I can check actual consumption/cost through Telcel or any other means?

If you are using the Amigo plan, a local call costs about $4.16 pesos per minute unless you take advantage of the many exceptions, like the Plan Fidelidad or for the first year listing those numbers you will frequently call. In that case the rates drop to $1.19 pesos per minute before discounts. After the first year, you can make all local calls for $1.19 before discount if you join for free the Plan Fidelidad. Oh and don't forget the three numbers you can register for free calls, as long as each call lasts less than 5 minutes.
Remember the *333 and *133# options for checking your latest balance You can also do so by having a telcel web account at www.atencionenlinea.telcel.com

I too have the iPhone 4, and have never had that problem unless I phone someone on another cell phone carrier.

Thanks for the reply, Pete. I don't know anything about Plan Fidelidad or registering numbers for free calls. Can you tell me where I can find out and/or sign up?

I have had an iphone that I got from telcel about 17 months ago paying 599.00 pesos a month but always whent over that, usually paying around 800 pesos, with telcel it can be tricky, especially if you have 3 g turned on it will suck money in no time, make sure that option is turned off, if you do make frequent calls to certain numbers make sure you register them. Telcel has the option to add friends as Pete mentions above.
The reason i whent to the plan package originally with Telcels was because I was on the card plan and seemed that was like feeding quick sand no matter what i did.
Having said the above, right now I have 2 phones an old iphone 2 g which has iusacel and their coverage is suprisingly better than telcel, in fact my contract with Telcel on my 3 g phone is up next month which iI will also transfer to Iusacell for the same 599.00 pesos a month, i will get tripple calling time 60 text messages a month more than with Telcel.
As far as pay as you go plans iusacell has more flexible options with their viva pack plan , you do have to start the plan in Guadalajara at an authorized service center but once done you can pay as you go with your debit/credit card and only buy the service you need.

Note that, as Pete points out, calls to landlines are prohibitively expensive from a cell. And worse: a friend called from San Fransisco, and it cost me 50 pesos a minute.
