We both have FM3s. When traveling IN COUNTRY in Mexico BY AIR, do we need to carry the U.S. Passports? Will they ask for them at the airport? The Volaris ticket information merely asks for a photo ID (which the FM3 is).

For security reasons, would rather not carry the U.S. passport.

Thanks!

I have never been asked for my passport while traveling IN Mexico, whether by air, bus or private car.

We just got back from a trip to Mexico City flying both ways and using our FM3's as photo I.D's., leaving our passports at home. No problemo.

A passport or other WHTI-compliant travel document is necessary for U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling to Mexico. You may not be asked to present your passport if entering Mexico by land, but you will surely need to present one upon your return to the United States.

better to be safe and have it on you

I never bring my passport when I travel within Mexico, only my FM3. Flew last fall to La Paz on Volaris and had no problem. They really just want some ID that matches the ticket name, from what I could tell.

Personally, we always travel with our Passports (and FM3s), even within Mexico. We have elderly family members in the US, and should we get an emergency phone call, by having our passports with us, we are prepared to go to the States from elsewhere in Mexico without having to return to Ajijic first.

If something should happen and you have to go back to the US, a passport would be nice to have. Even if something unexpected happened, a US passport will get you a lot of good attention.

But we ARE the elderly family members! Gotta remind the kids in the U.S. to carry their passports in case they have to come to Mexico quickly and rescue us;)

Traveling within Mexico by air I've always used my Mexican driver license. In November I flew to Tijuana and there was an immigration checkpoint for people ARRIVING to Tijuana from the interior of Mexico. I never carry my FM3 or passport traveling within Mexico so as not to worry about losing it and was questioned and had a notary certified copy of my FM3 and that was good enough for them.

A year ago we flew to Cabo and while waiting in line to scan the luggage, the Federal Police pulled me out of line and wanted to see my Passport and Immigration papers. I didn't have the passport and didn't have the FM3 because it was being renewed at the time. After 30 minutes of explaning all that, they let me leave. The only reason I can think of why they questioned me was that I was the only gringo in line and must have thought I was avoiding immigration. Go figure.

Thanks everyone for the input. Esposa has decided to carry the documents very securely.
