The information on the round-up is incorrect. There was a meeting regarding rounding up and destroying dogs but there was another meeting on Friday between the Chapala authorities and it was decided that there was no rabbies epidemy and that there would be no round-up.
.
Only one puppy that was bitten by a bat died. He had not been in contact with other dogs and there is no dog to dog contamination. The rabbies were confirmedby the Drs Ladron.

There has been a vaccination campaign going on in San Juan and Ajijic and every one is urged to have their dogs vaccinated and put a collar on them with a rabbies tag and even better a name and address or phone number,

There is no place in Ajijic where dogs can be confined for 72 hours and where the owners can go to pick up their dogs. The dogs cannot be destroyed for 72 hours as they are property and they cannot be destroyed unless there is a rabbies epidemy which there is not.

I got the information from the lady who is a lawyer and is working for anmal rights and health in Chapala.

I met her at a vet and she is coming to my house to deliver a dog she rescued from a puppy mill that was closed down. She asked me to deny the rumours.

Please calm down there will be no round up and if there was the community would be notified.

Thank you for the update.
It is nice, not to see draconian measures taken to deal with a perceived problem.

Thanks to the attorney , the animals rights individuals and the Health department for working together seeking a more reasonable solution.
However, it would have been beneficial for the public to help avoid possible “panic reaction” if there had been a follow-up public notice of this newest information.
Many times information sharing falls under the Cool Hand Luke style of publicizing information: what we have here is a failure to communicate.
As we all have seen many times , negative seems to have a faster speed of circulating than positive communications.

Again, thank you for the update.

Need some claification, please, as to what Chapala offical knows... or do they all know the same info,etc..
I just spoke with two different Vets in 2 different locations who have not heard word that there will be no round-up happening .
And one Vet. spoke to an official in Chapala around 11AM today, who said, yes, the round-up is to happen.

Are all involved on the same page & in the same book, regarding the status of the decision and action ?

Let's hope they get it straightened out. I can only imagine how many children's pets would get mistakenly distroyed. Too bad they couldn't do a mass vaccinate, worm and nueter program.

My memories as a seven year old child is being attacked by a Doberman, that the owner was apolgetic and did not
believe the "Dobie" was at fault because he had been trained.
My son at nine years old was chewed up pretty bad by a Labrador. My point is this! These are animals with
instincts that all of the training & good feelings do not completely eradicate!

Jalisco has a Leash Law! all of these dogs shoulb be rounded up. There is a Rabies threat & human life should be the priority.

Sounds to me like all of the vampire bats should be rounded up...that is where the problem came from isn't it?

The Guad Reporter said that there was an effort being made to destroy vampire bats in San Juan Cosala, where the bitten dog resided. I wondered if the vampire bats live in caves in the hills above SJC or if they live in abandoned barns and such in the village itself. There are a lot of bats around Lakeside and I would not know a vampire bat unless it bit me (then I would be suspicious;) , so I am curious how the authorities know which ones they are!

BTW, I noted when I went out in our neighorhood of La Canacinta that the dogs who are usually on the street were NOT on the street, so my Mexican neighbors must be taking this seriously.

Uh..... So instead of going after the real problem we use a trumped up excuse to execute dogs not guilty of the offense. Yeah...that sounds logical.

Seems to me someone should contact people who DO know which bats are the culprits. If they could somehow catch one..couldn't a locating device help find where they're roosting? May be too high tech...but it certainly would be worth looking into if the whole colony becomes infected. I watched a film on Vampire bats feeding on sleeping pigs...they never even woke up.....I don't mean dead! They just never felt the creepy little critters stealing their blood.

Found it! Prepare to be grossed out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Va9ull44yw

And the poor donkey! http://www.arkive.or.../video-08a.html

There are all kinds of bats; fruit bats which will ruin your orchard, insect bats that eat their weight in insects daily and Vampire bats which suck blood. Most bats you see are insect bats and very beneficial.

The Public Health Department was proposing the round up and the people in Chapala in charge of the Health Department had a meeting on Friday and decided the round up was not necessary and would not happen.

I am not involve with any of the department, I just happen to have met the woman/lawyer who defends the animals in the health DPt because she rescues dogs and in particular xiloitzcuintli and ask me if I could adopt one. I spoke with her this morning and she came to my house a couple of hours ago.
If the health deprtment syas there is no reason for a round up we know the orders will not come from them.

Who among the authorities is saying that the round up will happen, tell me his name and I will ask this lady why someone is still saying that the round up will happen.
Also ask the vets if they have spoken to Maya today, she was supposed to meet me Saturday but had to work and came to my house a couple of hours ago.
If you tell me which vet has this information I will be happy to ask Maya to speak with him, he may have information she does not have and vice-versa.

Exactly. That's why someone who studies bats should be the one to do the investigating.

We do NOT have a Rabies threat in this area......it would be so nice if persons sharing on this webboard would learn the truth before saying something incorrect. Many people were very upset with the first report, NOT true! I've talked with my vet at length today & have been assured.....NO ROUND UP!

All this bat business. Who says the rabies started with a bat? Did someone see the event? I suspect it is impossible to say where it really started and this is just a guess. There are other possibilities.

I thought that had been verified? Seems I read it somewhere....argh...now to find where. The puppy had had no outside contact...but it was more than that. I'll see if I can find it.

Are they the same as the blood sucking bats?

Vampire bats carry a different and distinct strain of rabies, so yes, rabies can be identified as coming from Vampire bats.
