The difference between them s that condensed milk is sweetened condensed milk. Without the added sugar in the condensed milk, it is evaporated milk. Both are in the same areas of the grocery store. Literal translation is " la leche condensada azucarada."

La Lechera...it's the brand name, but when you see a recipe that calls for sweetened condensed milk, 99% of the time the recipe calls for "una latita de La Lechera" or "media taza de La Lechera" or "échale un chorrito de La Lechera arriba del postre". The baked sweet potato and banana sellers on Mexico's street always ask, "Le pongo un chorrito de La Lechera?"

It's like saying, "Give me a Kleenex," when you really mean you want any kind of tissue to blow your nose--a generic use of a proper noun.

Exactly right, ask for leche condensada or la lechera for sweetened condensed. Mmmmm, la lechera has me thinking about arroz con leche.
