I'm just curious. How is the issue resolved if you need only a one-way ticket because you must drive your car back to the states for one reason or another.

You mean there's such a thing as a refundable ticket? Is it for the full and high priced ones? Do you have to have a really good reason to cancel (ie major illnes or something like that)?

I had tried to make a date change on my $420 ticket, but the cost would have been $200! And then no guarantee that I'd find such a good deal later on.

I love Southwest. No charge for 2 pieces of luggage and when I had to cancel a trip..."No problem. You have a year to use that amount of money." Wasn't there something about SW flying to Mexico in partnership with another airline? I think it required flying to somewhere like ABQ or something. Has anyone tried this?

Yes Sandy, there are still refundable ticket and yes they are expensive. Hopefully if it is necessary to purchase on in this instance the timing will be such that the credit card charge and refund will be in the same billing period so you don't have to pay it and then get refunded.

See post above about purchasing a refundable one-way ticket to return.

United and Continental are getting together. Just spend two days getting from MN to Guad. Held up in Chicago and again in Houston overnight. What a nightmare!! Avoid traveling with them for now if possible!

Southwest's Mexican airline partner is Volaris. Right now they have only a handful of cities in the US with connections.

I'm hoping they open up a Houston connection!

I know this is an older thread, but just in case someone finds it via a search...

We booked two one-way tickets in Jan. 2012 for our flights in February. DFW -> GDL

We booked online, and at no point were we required to get return flights. We were asked no questions about this at Customs or Immigration. We told Immigration we would be here for 180 days for our FMM.

We flew to Canada, and on our way back we were asked in Toronto if we had a return ticket. I said this is our return ticket. We are going back to Mexico because we live there. Then she asked if we had a resident visa. When I showed my FM-2 she kept quiet. I commented that it was ridiculous to ask for a return ticket when our departure was from Mexico. She said that I could have been coming from another country before entering Mexico; that did not mean that I was a resident. Some are more zealous than others.

I booked a one-way ticket on the internet on United while I was still in Beijing from SFO to GDL. When I checked in on arrival at the SFO airport, no one asked if I had a return ticket or what kind of visa I had. The agent gave me a temporary boarding pass to get me through security and the agent at the gate assigned me a seat. The flight itself was a nightmare, but that's another issue! Hint: try to avoid United if at all possible.
