Copies of anything will not be acepted anywhere in Mexico.  Originals are a must but never leave them in the car when you are not in it.  NEVER!

You'll need copies of your car registration, driver's licensce and Mexican insurance in order to get your Temporary Import Permit. Have the originals with you.

I've not been asked to show Mexican insurance for years - has anyone been asked for it recently?
