solajijic Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 Has anyone wandered over to Chapala and the malecon resturant La Copa de Camaron which was opened last weekend andis owned by the fellows who opened Hacienda Ajijic?
newinajijic Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 No, but we will try it. Jorge, the owner of Hacienda owns that too. It is in what once was his Grandmothers house. If it's as good as Hacienda Ajijic, it will be a great success. Not enough people on this board give Hacienda Ajijic the high marks it justly deserves. It is BETTER than Ajijic Tango, has the LARGEST and most juicy Filet Mignon at Lakeside. And you can actually talk at tables in Hacienda unlike Tango. ALL of Hacienda Ajijic's food is excellent. Some say Hacienda's menu is not as large as Tango. It's almost as large. It doesn't have the Pasta selection or Pizzas that Tango does, but you don't go to a steak place for that. Go to Angelica's Bistro, the only really good Italian restaurant in Lakeside or Toscana for pizza.
Guest RevImmigrant Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 John, I liked Angelica's Bistro and thought it was very good. However, La Taverna dei Quattro Mori was also excellent and has more items on the menu including veal.

losgatos Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 I'm definitely going soft in the head. I agree with "New" John not once but twice in the same post. Hacienda definitely has the best steak in town (the vacio), and Angela's Bistro Italian is exceptional for Lakeside. Their "chicken picatta" is wonderful. We like Taverna and Tango as well and their menus are more varied but give top marks to Hacienda and Angelas. we will be trying La Copa based on our enjoyment of Hacienda's foos.
losgatos Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 We also like Hacienda's food in addition to their foos.
Curmudgeon Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 For us the biggest differences between Hacienda Ajijic and Tango are that Tango only serves fries with the steak, where Hacienda has baked potatoes, and Hacienda serves excellent fish for those in our party who are not carnivores.
newinajijic Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 And if you order a Shrimp or Fish dish and it comes with rice, you can ask for a baked potato instead and they'll gladly accomodate you. If you get something too rare, they go back and put it under the broiler for a minute. I know I rave about Hacienda Ajijic a lot because no one in our dinner group has ever had a bad meal there. We are always greeted with a smile by Omar, the Manager, but I cannot say that about Tango's Manager. Tango's Managers attitude is why our Dinner group does not go to Tango anymore 4 times a year. They have so much business that they don't have to be nice to the customer any longer.
rjf1943 Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 "For us the biggest differences between Hacienda Ajijic and Tango are that Tango only serves fries with the steak.........." Tango gives you a choice of 4 sides with your steak, ..........steamed vegtables, mashed potatoes or two type of fries.
Doolittle Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 How about taking the "Tango vs. Hacienda" to a new thread, just in case someone posts something about Copa de Camarones so it won't seem out of place.
solajijic Posted March 14, 2010 Author Report Posted March 14, 2010 Tango gives you a choice of 4 sides with your steak, ..........steamed vegtables, mashed potatoes or two type of fries. Thats two sides, one veggie, one potato but you can have the potato 3 ways, 2 ways of which are similar to each other. LOL I don't care for Tango. Its dark the service has been sketchy and I jsut plain old don't like it.

Last month, we were treated to a fantastic meal there by a friend and his wife. He ordered four different appetizers, 2 salads, our 4 meals, and 3 different desserts as well as cocktails and wine. All the food was outstanding and the service the same. We have yet to find the food or service any different. Diamond Jim Brady used to base the amount of his tip on how low his water glass got before it was refilled. I do pretty much the same with my iced tea. Suffice it to say that our waiter/waitress always gets a nice tip as my iced tea glass never gets empty before someone is there refilling it. For food, service, and cost, it is a hard restaurant to beat in this area.
newinajijic Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Peter - Good post, however our Dinner group feels Hacienda Ajijic to be superior. Different strokes. Heres why: Those that like Filet Mignon: Hacienda has the largest Filet Mignon Lakeside, that is so much juicier and tender than Tango. It's almost twice the size. Tango is $ 105 pesos, Hacienda is $ 140 pesos. Tango gives you a choice of a steamed veggie or potatos. Hacienda gives you a Baked potato with sour cream AND lots and lots of brocolli, carrots and cauliflower cooked al dente (properly). Hacienda's service is better than Tango. Without a doubt Hacienda's Owner and Manager could teach Tango's manager some manners if he would listen. Doubt that. He's been very rude in the past. Never see him smile. The din at Tango is so loud you cannot carry on a conversation.
martygraw Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 John it's been fairly evedent from your many posts that you like the food at the Hacienda, but I fail to see what that has to do with the food at La Copa de Camaron. I think that was the question possed by the OP
newinajijic Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 martygraw - You're correct as the topic has drifted waay off course.
newinajijic Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Back to Copa de Camaron. We have not eaten there, but I put out an email to friends and received this response. Seafood ONLY: Fish, shrimp, octopus and calamari. Very good food. NO MEAT.

slumdog Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 Um, it's not beef, but fish, shrimp, octopus, etc IS meat...ask any vegetarian. I went looking for Copa but couldn't find it either along the restaurants at the east end of the malecon (where Casa de Molcajetes resides), or the other more rustico restaurants along the back end toward the west end of the park. I did eat upstairs at one of those, and the food and service was great. So can someone please tell me I'm not blind?

I love Hacienda Ajijic, eat there a lot, and much prefer their filet mignon to Tango's. We tried Copa de Camaron last week, but were underwhelmed. It's bright and clean and as per usual the waitstaff are nice, one or two from Hacienda . However, I ordered the huachinango frito (whole) which was quite small, a bit overcooked, and was 185pesos. I asked for veggies instead of papas or rice, but all they had was salad (iceberg). My friend had the marlin tostada, which consisted of marlin spread on a crisp, packaged tostada. The marlin was ok, rich of course. Rather than serve a crisp fresh tortilla they use the cracker like tortillas that come in a package. They also served a bowl full of fried charales from the lake...not my fave by any means...can't say I won't go back, but will probably continue to frequent the other fish place just down from the Beer Garden. Copa de Camaron is located about 2.5 blocks west of the Brannif House... on the corner of Morelos and the malecon, just next to the gelato place. .

Aaaah. Thank you. Addendum, Tuesday: found it today, although it was closed at 2pm. I didn't seen a sign indicating hours, but I was driving by and may have missed it.
