The deadline of April 1st is coming up fast and it's no joke!

I had some issues registering mine with my CURP and found the easiest way to do it is to do the following:

1) Get your CURP (go to the Registro Civil office in Chapala or Ajijic with the original and copy of your passport face page, FM3 face page and renewal page and a utility bill).
2) Have your CURP number and cell phone in front of you.
3) Send the following text message "ALTA. (insert your curp here)" remeber to do ALTA and the period and no space. Send it to 2877

I read somewhere that foreigners could be registered using their passports - is that not true and we all have to get CURP's?

I think foreigners can register with their passports if they go to a service center of the phone company and show the original and a copy. I don't think there are any local service centers. Many here should get their CURP as they will need it more and more if they plan on being anything more than part time visitors.

Actually you do not need your passport (that is when you buy a new cell phone). I just took my cell phone to the Telcel office by the Internet Cafe and she registered it for me in a few minutes. All she needs is CURP number.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been putting off the CURP thing.....and so it's time!

Has anyone who's gotten their CURP at the Delegación in Ajijic satisfied the comprobante with something other than a utitilty bill? All ours are in the landlord's name. I do have a Jalisco Driver's License with the correct address.

There is a new law requiring all cell phone users to register themselves for each cell phone used to be able to track users as cell phones are used in many crimes. I think a residency letter will work for the CURP, go to the registro civil in Ajijic and ask for Paloma, 20's young blonde attorney who works there and is nice and a friend of mine, she is very helpful.

Does this law apply to visitors as well as residents? How would a tourist get a CURP for a cell phone? And are temporary cell phones still available for purchase in Mexico for visitors?

Applies to everybody. Upon purchasing a new phone I believe you can let them copy your passport to register the phone.

Does this apply to pay-as-you-go cell phones?

All cell phones as most are prepaid or pay as you go.

Spence when you register the CURP # is that stored on the chip or the phone? If not on the sim card then the phones brought down from the states might be a problem right?

Foreigners can go to the Telcel tienda next to the defunct casino with their phone and their passport and the nice lady there will register your phone. It is required of all OWNERS of cell phones. You do not need a CURP number to register your phone.

I got an error message back that the format was invalid. Says ALTO.NAME(S).FIRSTNAME.DATEOFBIRTH all in Spanish of course.

This is the same error I got, that is why I put the post, you need to do it like I posted to successfully do it and not get the error message.

They will tell you to do it another way but it really doesn't work.

I believe I did just as you posted. ALTO.CURPNUMBER I've double and triple checked that the CURP is correct. What did I miss?

It is ALTA.CURPNUMBER

Do you have a real CURP with the printout in front of you?

I have Movistar so if you have a different provider results could be different

According to Intercasa, should be "ALTA" not "ALTO".

Duh! ALTA not ALTO. I have a CURP in my FM2. I'm a Telcel customer, but I'll give it a try with the correct spelling. Thanks for the help.
