Guest RevImmigrant Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 A group of ladies had our Sunday lunch at Los Telares this past Sunday. There were 8 of us. Two ordered the portobello mushroom stuffed with spinach and topped with cheese as an entree; I ordered it as an appetizer. One ordered a large salad as an entree. Two had fajitas; two had coconut shrimp and I had the rib eye. The mushroom and spinach were not really cooked, just put under the broiler long enough to melt the cheese. It was OK, but would have been better had the mushroom and spinach actually been cooked. The fajitas were OK, but nothing special. The shrimp platters had alot of shrimp on them, but someone said the shrimp wasn't very good. I ordered the rib eye with beans and was served a baked potato, which I gave to someone else. The waiter finally brought me the beans, but they weren't very good anyway. Two ladies ordered dessert: one had pecan pie and the other had the cheesecake. Three of us tasted the cheesecake and all agreed that the texture was poor and it was tasteless. The pecan pie wasn't very good either. The service was very disorganized. We got there at 1 PM and they were not busy, so there was no excuse for that. One of the ones who ordered the mushroom/spinach/cheese for an entree was served first, long before anyone else got their food. The waiter got one order totally wrong; she ordered the mushroom/spinach/cheese for an entree and he thought she ordered a salad. There was also a mixup on the bills. The waiter charged another lady for the baked potato I gave her that had been brought to me by mistake; this was corrected before she paid. Some got takeout boxes for our uneaten food. One said her cat refused to eat her arrachera (not me). Two of us had a mild case of gastroenteritis early Monday morning. One said she got sick the last time she ate there too. We will not go there again. I paid $209 pesos for the appetizer, rib eye (it was $135 pesos) and tea.
newinajijic Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 This is the worst report I have ever seen on Los Telares restaurant, but I'm not saying that you had good meals or that it went well. You should have sent the food back and complained to the Manager or Owner. Take a look at the other thread where everyone has praised Los Telares. Our Dinner group has never had a bad meal there. As far as Gastro problems, you most likely didn't get it there. It won't come on that quick and you probably got the gastro problems from eating elswhere days before.
slumdog Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 You should have sent the food back and complained to the Manager or Owner...As far as Gastro problems, you most likely didn't get it there. It won't come on that quick and you probably got the gastro problems from eating elswhere days before. There you go again, always telling people what to do. As far as gastrointestinal problems are concerned, or why don't we just say 'stomach problems' (fast eating, indigestion, reflux, heartburn, the ever popular gas), these come on very quickly. Very quickly, like minutes rather than hours. What can take some time is what we generally refer to here as amoeba-type problems, but even then you'll probably notice something happening within 24 hours.
Guest Gringal Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 The last time we ate at Los Telares was their Wednesday Buffet, shortly after they started doing that. It wasn't long after we were home again that the uh, "stomach problems" hit. I couldn't very well send the food back in its altered form. Sorry John, but when two people go to a restaurant and both get sick within the next two hours, logic suggests a connection between the two events. Logic also dictates that when a restaurant across the street is mobbed at lunch hour and Telares is empty, there are some dissatisfied customers staying away in droves. Too bad. It's an attractive dining place.
Guest RevImmigrant Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 First of all to clear up the misunderstanding, my gastroenteritis hit me at 3 AM the following morning. The other lady's hit her also in the early morning hours, so it was more than 2 hours after eating. And I certainly know what gastroenteritis is since I've had it several times. Different organisms can cause it; some hit faster than others. One kind can cause symptoms within 12-24 hours after ingesting the food; another kind will result in symptoms within as little as 2 hours. Here it's generally considered to be bacterial in origin. And, as Gringal said, there must be a connection when 2 people who both ate at that restaurant became ill afterwards, particularly when one said she had been ill after eating there the last time too. Also, there is something wrong with the food when a cat won't eat meat scraps when offered (unless it's exceptionally highly seasoned or has Tabasco sauce on it). They have an acute sense of smell and can tell by the smell if it's bad. And, yes, there is a reason they're not busy. It's a lovely garden setting; if only the food was as good as the garden.

This is sad to hear. We've never had a bad meal there, always had good service, and never had any stomach problems after dining there. We had the buffet last Wednesday and it was varied, delicious, and inexpensive. We've not had lunch there, maybe there's a different chef in the evenings.
MountainGal Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 I ate there yesterday with a group of five for lunch. We all agreed that the food was good, interesting presentation, attentive service. By the time we left, the place was full. Probably because so many other restaurants are closed on Tuesday. But still, it was a good experience and we will return. Sorry others had problems. Personally, I avoid buffets whenever I can, anywhere. To me, it's tempting fate...
slumdog Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 We'll try the buffet tonight, and I'll report tomorrow. Two of my party have fairly sensitive stomachs.
slumdog Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Okay, ate there tonight for the buffet. Food was very average: chicken wings in a nice sauce, but boiled wings with the (yech) skin on; a chopped-beef and veggie dish tasted like the worst pot roast ever; the ribs were tasty, but due to the sauce, not the cooking, which left them tough; veggie mix was okay; white rice and veggies was okay; creamed cilantro soup was great; fettucine noodles in tomato sauce was very picante, and the tomato sauce was right out of the can. Didn't try the fish. I would never go there for the buffet again. The service was excellent and very pleasant. Owner Ricardo was super-eager to please; he took back a stale piece of cheesecake and apologized sincerely; apparently the chocolate cake was yummy, but of course they don't make their own desserts. Bill was 642 pesos before tip; that included five glasses of house white and two limonadas mineral. I should have double-checked my bill; I'm still trying to figure out where the money went.
