newinajijic Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Repost from Jan. 9, 2010 Last night 10 of us from our Bi Monthly Dinner group went to Ricki's Thai & Japanese restaurant. We all love this place. For Appetizers, 5 or 6 of us had the Green Salad. It is a huge salad consisting of Romaine Lettuce, Spinach, Cucumber, Tomatoes, Avocado and red onion with an asian style dressing. The Salad is large enough for two although many like myself order it for one. We think it is the "best salad" in Ajijic. Cost $ 45. pesos. Three people had the Miso soup. Three of us had the Shrimp Tempura appetizer, 6 very large shrimp in Tempura batter. The lightest batter I've tasted, absolutely no sign of grease. $ 45. pesos. I ordered a second order of Shrimp Tempura and shared it with a friend, so we ate 9 shrimp each. One other person ordered a Chicken dish with a dark brown gravy with sesame seeds on top. Another ordered the Eeel dish, not sure what else came with it. He typically orders this dish. Food quality: Excellent Portion size: Large Service: Excellent Ambiance: None Prices: Low Cleanliness: Good to Exc Our Dinner group highly recommends Ricki's Thai & Japanese restaurant. newinajijic Posted February 21, 2010 Author Report Posted February 21, 2010 Repost from Nov. 19, 2009 Last night on a whim both of us went to Ricki's Thai & Japanese restaurant. We have been there before seperately and with our Dinner group and love their food, service and reasonable prices. We both ordered the Appetizer of Tempura Shrimp with a side of white rice. The Shrimp are soooo delicious with the lightest Tempura batter ever. There are 6 large Shrimp for $ 50 pesos. I had the Green Salad first which consists of Romaine Lettuce, Spinach, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Avocados and red onion. It is very fresh and the lettuce is very crisp. It's a salad that's large enough for two, although I finished it myself. IMO, it is the "best" salad in Ajijic. I think it was $ 40 or $ 42 pesos. The other person had Miso Soup. The total bill including 2 soft drinks was $ 240. pesos. The Menu has Soups, Salads, Appetizers, Sushi, Combination Plates and Teriyaki. Food: Excellent Service: Excellent Ambiance: None Prices: Low Clealiness: Excellent We and our Dinner group highly recommend Ricki's on Marcello Castellanos # 27(mountainside) off the Carretera. Guest RevImmigrant Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 I had lunch at Ricki's about 10 days ago. I had the shrimp tempura for an appetizer. The shrimp was very good, but the batter was not as light and crispy as I've had other places. The tempura sauce was excellent and was served warm, which was a nice touch. I ordered the chicken donburi for a main course. It was served with white miso soup; I personally prefer the Aka Miso (red miso), but the white was OK. The donburi was delicious with excellent sauce on the rice and the chicken was well-cooked too. The decor is rather plain, but attractive and the place is very clean. They weren't busy when I was there so it's not surprising that the service was excellent. I liked Ricki's very much and will definitely go back.
Orygun Duck Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I spent 9 years in Japan in a previous incarnation and view it as remarkable that you can find this quality of Japanese food in a small town in Mexico. Great food and no compromises on the ingredients!
slumdog Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 The sushi rice is absolutely awful at Ricki's.
privado Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 I spent 9 years in Japan in a previous incarnation and view it as remarkable that you can find this quality of Japanese food in a small town in Mexico. Great food and no compromises on the ingredients! I agree, spouse lived in Japan for 3 years - I'm from San Francisco- San Jose and SF have the largest Japanese communities outside Japan and Hawaii-Had a Japanese roommate (Sansei) in College -(Issei) grandmother and (Nisei)- mother they used to send care packages at New years and hOlidays. Spouse and I ate Japanese food every Friday for 12 ears when OUR kids were in school- WE also hosted Japanese University Students in our home for years, who often cooked for us.- Love, Love,Love Japanese food- it's the one thing I really miss in Mexico Ive eaten at almost every Japanese rest in Guad- IMO Ricki's limited menu beats them all-even Suehiro's His mixed Tempura is better than the just the shrimp one. One day asked where he learned to cook- told me he lived in Palo Alto for 15 years- No wonder- Home to Stanford and it's huge Asian student population and San Jose Japan Town just a short hop away. PS> P F CHANGS IS OPENING IN ANDARES MALL- YEH- FINALLY DECENT CHINESE FOOD- SCALLOPPS ARE FABULOUS
privado Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 Where is Andares Mall? Andares Mall is located on Ave. Patria just north of the Autonoma University in Zapopan- New underground tunnel exiting off Patria to underground parking is now open. Andares is one of the most popular evening out places in the city for Tapatios. It has an all VIP movie theatre, Good size Casino, some of the nicest stores in Guadalajara and many restaurants with Valet Parking Outback, California Pizza Kitchen, Sushi, Thai, Italian, Argentine, + a few others and now soon Chinese at PF Changs, They've become so popular that most have expanded to include tented outdoor restaurants as well as indoor. It is only 10 minutes from Costco and the Gallerias Mall -use the exit just before Costco to Patria and follow to Andares.
