Guest Gringal Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 Just walked by the new Thai place "Simply Thai" on Donato Guerra, where "Gatherings" used to be. First block after the corner of 16 Septiembre. Menu out front for lunch and dinner. Dishes around 75-85 pesos for lunch, and a good variety of the favorites. Has anyone tried it yet?

A friend just called to say she had lunch there, that the people are delighful and the food was good - no more to add to that brief report.
Bisbee Gal Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Had dinner there last night....it's excellent. Large menu, great atomosphere and friendly service. Each of the four at our table thought the food was terrific; the kitchen will adjust the spice level to whatever suits your taste buds. Dinner prices average 110-130 pesos. It's not on Donato Guerra, it's on Ramon Corona, opposite the main gate at LCS.

Guest Gringal Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Just had lunch at Simply Thai. Beautiful decor; friendly owners and staff; excellent food. I asked the owner about MSG and he said they don't use it. Highly recommend.
budman123 Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Lunch today.....a big winner....lovely place...food and service terrific
MountainGal Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Does anyone know what days they are open? I would love to try it for my Tuesday "After Spanish Class" lunch group. Unfortunately many good places are closed Tuesdays.
gimpychimp Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 We ate there today and really enjoyed it. The place has much nicer decor than most restaurants around town and the young couple who own it are very very nice and interested in feedback from customers. They will be open every day at the moment, as they say they want to see which days are the busiest before they choose a day to be closed. They open at 11:30 and will close around 8 or 9pm.
lardca Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Went the other day with friends. It was their second day open. We were most impressed. The decor was very pleasing. They have some very nice touches. Unique and well thought out. Loved the menu covers. The food was excellent. Some nice choices. Good quality. Nice presentation. Authentic. Owners were very involved and especially interested in seeing that their guests had a good experience. We'll definitely go back again and again. Delightful!
Guest Gringal Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Are the owners and/or chef Thai? I didn't ask, but I'm guessing the cooks and the owner's wife are Asian. Thai, Laotian ?? We returned this evening with six friends and they were all very happy with the place and the food. Word has spread and they were full for the evening. If you go, it would be wise to reserve.
gimpychimp Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 The young couple running front of house are a Canadian man and his Thai wife, though she sounds like she has lived most or all of her life in Canada. Her Thai parents run the kitchen and do the cooking.
Irish Gal Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Eight of us went to Simply Thai tonight and can vouch for their excellent food. We are had appetizers, eight dishes that we shared as well as lots of steamed rice and shared a couple of desserts. We're planning to return soon. The service was very good considering that they had a full house. The decor is superb. The owners are anxious to please. Their parents had a Thai restaurant in Ottawa and are now running the kitchen here. It's well worth a visit!
newinajijic Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Does anyone have their phone number? We are anxious to go.
Irish Gal Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Simply Thai Ramon Corona #11 (across from Lake Chapala Society) Ajijic 766-5665 Owners are Jim McMahon and Thip Phonsavath
Doolittle Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 We dined there last evening. Everything was superb! Nice garden in the back and the upstairs is huge. This is a keeper!
Bisbee Gal Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Realize I'm going off-topic....but, the person who was thinking of opening an Indian restaurant here, but didn't: Maybe he (or someone else) should rethink that idea. Given the immediate popularity of Simply Thai (it was full the night we went, on its 2nd night of opening), there is evidently a pent-up demand for both ethnic and highly flavored foods here.

You betcha! We came from ethnic food heaven...the Monterey Bay Area in CA and have been lusting for it ever since. Bring on the Indian, all the areas in China, Portugese, all the Italian areas and Moroccan. And anyone I've left out. Mexican and U.S. Midwestern food are fine, but my palate is fickle and wants to play around.

newinajijic Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Restaurants are having a difficult enough time here now. I don't think most of the "specialty" restaurants mentioned above would make it for more than a couple of months, even if they were of good quality. There are not enough NOB types here year round to support them, let alone what percentage of people would even like some of the cuisines mentioned. I believe we are lucky to have the few good restaurants we have in this small town. We should applaud their owners for serving us well.

I believe we are lucky to have the few good restaurants we have in this small town. We should applaud their owners for serving us well. I think we are getting expats with more "international" palates these days, and they will patronize the best of the newcomers. Note that the restaurants which are making it in this economy are not great in number, but they are GOOD. I applaud them, but we need the best of the specialty places, too. I am not surprised when some of those are very lightly patronized, as the food served is nothing to get excited about. I'm excited about the new Thai restaurant. It's a fresh, healthy cuisine, heavy on flavor and light on fats. I think there are many of us looking for that. For those who are fond of deep fry, red meat and gravy, there are already enough places in town to please them.
Guest Gringal Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Walked by today and found sign on front that say they are "closed indefinitely" ! Says they have kitchen work and water problem.......I hope that's all there is.
MountainGal Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Walked by today and found sign on front that say they are "closed indefinitely" ! Says they have kitchen work and water problem.......I hope that's all there is. I passed the owner coming out of Walmart carrying a big jug of cleaner. Hope everything works out. We went for lunch yesterday. The place was packed, food good. The place has great potential.
Guest Gringal Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Up to the minute report: (Well up to about 1 p.m.) Doors are open. "OPEN" sign in window. "Word has it" that they are trying to limit the number of customers by asking people to make reservations. Considering the (literally)overwhelming response since they first opened, this may be necessary for survival!
Travis Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 I think they probably need a bigger kitchen. If I recall, it's very small. Compare the size of the kitchen with the size of the restaurant.... Regardless, we accidentally ate there last Thursday night, which may have been their first night open. We were headed somewhere else, but there was a long wait. I really didn't want to test it on opening night, but we ate there anyway. The food was delicious and highly flavorful. We ordered ours "medium hot" and I almost cried when it actually tasted spicy. What a thrill in this town. Mom and Dad know how to cook Thai, for sure. They just need a little elbow room! I pray that this place makes it. Yum.
