maggilu Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 I finally tried this little restaurant next to the dessert place that used to be called Miky's (between LaFloresta and Domino's). It was exactly the kind of place I've been wishing for. Menu is sandwiches and salads. Salads are huge and there is a wide selection. Prices are quite reasonable - 50 or 55 pesos for either, and refrescos only 10 pesos. The place is convenient WITH parking, and the owner very personable. I don't know hours but he is closed on Tuesday. Hope he makes it.
newinajijic Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 I hope that any new venture makes it too, as these people put in their hard earned money and have such high expectations. The key to success here is consistency in food quality as well as service. $ 50. pesos for a salad is a lot in Ajijic, unless it's superhuge and has tons of ingredients in it. Do you think they can compete with the tried and true PANINO, who serves some of the best Lunches around.
jimmiller Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 I lived in California for 15 years and ate many salads there, but I never had a California Salad. What, pray tell, is a California Salad? I assume it's made up of fruits and nuts.
maggilu Posted January 22, 2010 Author Report Posted January 22, 2010 The restaurant offers 6 or so different salads. The one I tried has mixed greens, grilled steak, mushrooms, red and yellow and green peppers and I can't remember what else. The salad is meal size.
tigerlily Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 Thanks for telling us about this, OP! We'll have to try it - it sounds very, very good.

The food is great, Lupita is wonderful, but I am still hungry when I leave there. I welcome this new venue, which is currently not available anyplace else down here and would gladly pay 50 pesos for a good salad and a return to healthy eating. Have seen the sign for months and glad to know they are finally open. Can't wait to try it. terry
Shira Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 A friend and I ate at California Salad today. The salads are humungous and absolutely delicious. We both walked out completely sated. They are a wonderful bargain at 50 and 55P. They also have sandwiches and tacos.

The salad included chicken which was grilled for my order. Food was very good - and I will definitely go back at least once a week. I was also the only one customer - so do hope he makes it - Give him a try if you like salads!
viejomalogato Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Sounds great, however, since I have been the recipient of Typhoid a couple of times I am very cautious about eating salads or any greens .... anywhere. Do you-all have any scruples about this type of food? An what are your guidelines? Thank you R
slumdog Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 My personal take, and others may disagree, is that decent restaurants take extra care to keep their food and their employees' hands clean, simply because a: The second largest medical problem in Mexico is stomach problems (next to diabetes!), and they are as susceptible as "we" are, and b: their reputation depends on it. I would guess that a salad restaurant in particular would be extra careful.
MtnMama Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I don't worry about it. I don't eat much "street food" but otherwise I have a few criteria and then don't worry. I prefer a place that appears to have a kitchen sink - where dishes aren't washed in the bathroom - and a certain amount of cleanliness. That being said, some of my favorite restaurants in Joco are real dives, but the food is divine - and I am still alive and haven't gotten sick yet. I understand your concerns. When I first moved here, I only bought meats in nice plastic packages from places like Soriana or Tony's Meats. Now I buy at Joco indoor market and wash off the meat when I get home. It's a gradual process. And California Salad has wonderful amazing salads and you will miss out by not going there.
slumdog Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 I don't worry too much either, via the same reasoning as yours. Although I'm trying to conjure a place that washes their dishes in the bathroom sink, lol. I've only been sick once and that just about killed me, after eating at a very popular tamale place in Ajijic that's only open a couple of nights every week. No one else in my group that night felt anything.
the walkers Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 we are daily salad eaters and also eat street food. the secret? know about colloidal silver, it will set you free. you may even have some at home and not know it. they sell it here at just about every market under the names abiosan and microdyne. although it is yellowish, it is silver, not iodine! most restaurants use it to wash their produce and if you get something nasty, you can put some drops in water and drink it.the best medicine is a healthy immune system....so eat your veggies! Sounds great, however, since I have been the recipient of Typhoid a couple of times I am very cautious about eating salads or any greens .... anywhere. slumdog Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Colloidal Silver issues: “Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada. The authors report a case of a 71-year-old man who developed myoclonic status epilepticus and coma after daily ingestion of colloidal silver for 4 months resulting in high levels of silver in plasma, erythrocytes, and CSF. Despite plasmapheresis, he remained in a persistent vegetative state until his death 5.5 months later. Silver products can cause irreversible neurologic toxicity associated with poor outcome.”
newinajijic Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 slumdog - A very, very interesting article. I have Epilepsy, under control with medication and I know what status epilepticus is and you can easily die from it. Is the walkers post above saying that Microdyne and Albiosan is colloidal silver? And you can drink it? That's absolutely crazy. Who would ever use a chemical like that and ingest it? And I don't think they know anything about Status Epilepticus.
the walkers Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 there are some people who don't want you to have any control of your health and will do anything to discourage you from looking any further. we have been making and taking colloidal silver for more than 8 years and our health has never been better. it was the impurities in silver that turned the aristocracy blue, but they didn't get the plague. we use .999 silver and steam distilled water so that's not happening. never heard of anyone getting any side effects from properly made colloidal silver except for the herxheimer reaction, a flue like feeling from so many dead germs being disposed of at once, so start off slowly, a tablespoon at a time. certainly nothing like epilepsy. you are much more likely to have a reaction to aspartame. i an allergic to sulfa drugs and penecillin so this stuff as been great. and because we make our own, we know exactly what is in it. some people who have been skeptical have first tried it out on their pets for longstanding problems that the vets couldn't fix ,even after 100's of $$$. or low grade persistant infections that their doctors' have told them to learn to live with.or dentures that never really fit and rub the gums raw. what do you use to wash your vegetables? chlorox? that creates so many known cancer causing compounds that it should only be used on surfaces, not ingested.please, slumdog tell us what you do to keep yourself and family healthy....or do you just run to the doctor and take whatever they're dishing out this year? the walkers Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 i also read the articles that slumdog directed us to and have found that the man who died had an inherited condition, myoclonal epilepsy. i certainly know what status epilepticus is and i know how much epileptics fear it. we had a roommate who chose to commit suicide instead of continuing with drugs that didn't control the seizures or give him any quality of life inbetween times. and yes, abiosan and microdyne are colloidal silver, just look on the back and see plata colloidal. they are made industrially with lots of electricity and perhaps some protein gel for stability and is yellow because of the size of the particles. we prefer homemade cuz you can make the particles so small that they can enter a virus, as well as bacteria , fungus and molds. there are directions on it for purifying drinking water and you can use it for wounds and bites as well. the way it works with one celled organisms is that it enters the cell, connects with the enzyme that controls the respiration of the cell and turns it off. it is then disposed off with the dead cell. no mutations, etc. and it won't mess with other medications either. slumdog - A very, very interesting article. newinajijic Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 to the walkers - If you're allergic to sulfa drugs and penecillin, can't you take other Antibiotics that are far more advanced than those two and cover a wider range of viruses? I don't think anyone said anything about using Chlorox for cleaning vegetables, although you can. I certainly would never use it. I use Microdyne, then rewash all the veggies in purified water. The guy who committed suicide because medication couldn't control his seizures most likely didn't have a good Neurologist and a hospital where they could try different medications on him in a controlled setting. Geeez, I can't imagine committing suicide under any circumstances.
tobyjug Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Well, so much for eating salads in Paradise!!!!
slumdog Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Walkers, usually I like your comments, but now you've decided to imply that I run off to the doctor every time something goes wrong? Not like you. You may not have noticed that the intro to my quote was just one link to a fairly long article that incorporated more than just the one story. I would assume the curious on this board would do their own Googling for more information, as there are an absolute ton of sites about it, both good and bad. And the page I linked to actually got their quote from Neurology.com, which looks like a fairly-well respected publication (http://www.neurology.org/cgi/content/abstract/62/8/1408). I've never tried it, and I wouldn't. Regardless of how unsatisfying some may find their government's food and drug administrations, I tend to go with what I know. I've been here long enough to have seen the whole coconut oil-cures-all fantasy to the MSS drops, and everything in between, and while there have been exceptions, the people I am in contact with regularly have given up on their miracle cures because of lack of results or high cost (with lack of results). I was married to a gal who ordered vitamins and supplements every couple of weeks from her "dealer", and through all the years, not even her fingernails got any stronger, even though she took the remedies religiously. Never meaning to offend, I just find it surprising when someone, anyone, blurts out a message about a cure-all. Now, if it contained 60% alcohol, I might be more interested.
Guest Gringal Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 A little microdyne in the basin with the veggies, then a clear purified water rinse makes sense to me. The doc said Yakult was a good thing to take daily, and after a while you even get used to the taste. Now, my problem with the local restaurants is that you can't tell, from sitting in the dining area, what's going on in the kitchen. One of the nicer places in Ajijic sent someone out to get some salad greens when we ordered Caesars and they didn't have the ingredients on hand. About five minutes after the greens arrived, we were served. Clearly, there was no way they soaked those greens in anything for fifteen minutes. Sure enough, stomach problems......and then thought about the process. Don't need that. Never went back. Some people are lucky and it takes a heavy-duty microbe to get them sick. Others are not so lucky. And then, three people can have the same dish, but only one serving is tainted. You just never know. After a while, simple experience reveals which restaurants take care of the food. I'll try the California salads place...and hope for the best.
slumdog Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 I'll try the California salads place...and hope for the best. Thanks in advance, then, for being the sacrificial lamb, lol.
the walkers Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 it's not only here, we use it in the states as well. produce is pawwed over and sneezed on and trucked over 1500 miles to get to you. the sickest i've ever been has been in the states before we knew how to safely clean our food. and not eating salads is not an option if you want to keep yourself healthy and your immune system up to snuff.what plan do you have to keep your family's food safe? Well, so much for eating salads in Paradise!!!!
Guest Gringal Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 Thanks in advance, then, for being the sacrificial lamb, lol. You're welcome.
newinajijic Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 If you want to stay TOTALLY HEALTHY in Mexico do NOT eat Salads in a restaurant. You do not know if the veggies were washed and whose handling them even if they were washed. This advise comes from my Doctor, a well known and respected Doctor in Ajijic.
