It sounds like you may need a neurologist. See your GP for a recommendation to one in Guadalajara.

CAUTION! If there is back pain and leg pain, this may be a pinched nerve requiring the attention of a neurologist and/or orthopedist. Surgery may be indicated. A chiropractor could be dangerous; very dangerous.

I've been to a neurologist and a chiropractor with no relief. I guess my next step is an orthopedist
or spine specialist. I know down there at lakeside I'd have to get a referral from a GP or internist.
Thanks for the input.

i have had spine and leg problems for many years because i do sports-still do.go to maskaras clinic and make an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. you don't need to go through a gp first like nob.
he is not invassive if it ain't neccessary. about 2 years ago i went to him because i had a partially torn achilles tendon and asked him if he could give me cortison shots. he told me that would only help the pain, not the healing. so 6 weeks later i was playing v-ball again sorta. didn't have physio either. just walked every day slowly.
it's a good time to be living in mexico-rollyb

Pedro is referring to Dr. Gonzales, who comes to Maskaras Clinic on Fridays from his offices in Guadalajara. He speaks excellent English and is a very capable orthopedic surgeon who has helped many at Lakeside. You can call Maskaras to make an appointment to see him there, or you can go to his Guadalajara offices across the street from the main entrance to Hospital Angeles del Carmen.

Dr. Antonio Cueva, orthopedic surgeon in Guadalajara is one of the best! He goes to Houston very often to learn new procedures. My husband and I have had a total of 3 surgeries with him, all successful! He will not perform surgery unless there is an alternative method.

I seem to remember someone mentioning a Dr Dittmar, spine doctor, who works out of the medical building across from Tabarka restaurant on the west side of Ajijic.

The clinic is no longer across from Tabarka. It is now called Integrity Clinic and is located behind the Pemex on the libramiento by the car wash. Dr. Dittmar no longer comes to Lakeside. However, I second him as he is trained both as a neurologist and orthopedist of the spine. That is where I would go if it were me.

I see that the original post was in 2009, but I still stand by Dr. Dittmar.

I recommend Dr. Dittmar. I went to him for a second opinion, found out the first Dr. I went to was reading my MRI incorrectly.

If you're having pain radiating down your hip and into your leg, you need to see a neurosurgeon since that's usually evidence of a herniated disc causing nerve root irritation. Get your regular doctor to refer you to one in Guadalajara. The reason for a spine fusion is instability of the spine not to remove the herniated disc.

Do NOT see a chiropractor. They are dangerous and if they manipulate the spine the wrong way, it can cause permanent paralysis. This is what the neurosurgeons I worked for in Dallas for many years used to tell the patients. It's prudent to take the word of two nationally known and highly regarded neurosurgeons over that of others.
