I am told there is someone in central Ajijic who will paint a flower design on a new ceramic bathroom sink and then fire it so it stays without chipping. I see these sinks all around, but no one can tell me exactly where to get this done.

There is a little shop between Telmex and Jara's on the mountain side of the carreterra in Ajijic that has a lot of that kind of ceramic...if they can't do it, I'll bet they know who could. Buena Suerte

You see lots of them in Tonala, a couple of shops have complete painted comodes, would love to have one of those.

the ones that last are from delores higaldo. they are called Tolavera. many different patterns. they are sold all over mexico and even in the u.s. at big prices. here one should cost about $40 dollars. beware imitations. the patterns disappear or fade and you have an ugly mess.

Talevera sinks (many in stock) at the talevera place in San Antonio, on the southside of the Carretera, east of MBE (he has large pots standing out front).

There is a small place selling the Talavera style sinks, as well as many other decorative tile items, across the street from the big tile shop on the right as you drive into Jocotepec. We bought ours there, and it's just a lovely as it was two years ago.
They are so inexpensive that you would probably be better off buying a new one than trying to have yours decorated. For a permanently fired in finish, it would need to be removed anyway.
Good luck. Love those sinks.

we paid $40 at that shop in ajijic because we were in mid construction. subsequently found a shop in tonala[near the entrance on the left] for half that in the size we bought and a far greater selection. sinks, crappers, soap dishes,etc.-you could colour and design co-ordinate yer entire bathroom.
it's a good time to be living in mexico-rollyb

I appreciate your responses BUT I want to buy a ceramic sink (not talavera altho those are nice) and have it painted and fired. I was told by the tile shop in Jocotepec and friends as well that there is someone in Ajijic who does this, but I do not have exact directions to his place. I have seen this in various people's homes but no one could tell me who the person is and where he is located.

I've seen these as well and they are gorgeous. Not so overpowering as the Talavera ones from local stores. I was wondering myself ....but thought if I find an "artist" and show him what I want and then a "potter"...between 2 of them they will know what to do?
Cheers

To paint over glazed ceramic or porcelain is very tricky. I did this in the states using china paint but you need a ceramic kiln to fire the paint to make it permanent. The firing of the paint has to be monitored so you can get the correct temperature, if not, too hot and the colors will deteriorate, to cold and the paint will stay in the surface and start peeling with the use of the sink. Be careful and do your research before you pay for this kind of work. The sink is going to be in constant use and any superficial paint eventually will desapppear or deteriorate.
