I just arrived in town yesterday and take possession of my unfurnished house in the Raquet Club on Wednesday. Unfortunately my Canadian moving company seems to have screwed up and the shipment of all my furniture is going to be delayed for awhile. It looks like I will be camping in my house for some time. Can someone tell me where is a good place to buy 2 single mattresses? We needed these anyway so will sleep on them on the floor for awhile (I have the box springs and support for these 2 mattresses in transit). I have a lot of chairs coming but need 2 in the meantime. I am going to need a chair to use with my desktop computer and a chair for the casita so I may as well buy them right now. Any suggestions where to buy 2 chairs?
I have previouly spent only 2 weeks in the area so I am not familar with the various stores.

There are several furniture and bazaar stores in Riberas east of San Antonio including Arden (green bldg on Mtn side) where I bought a recliner. Also a furniture store on the SE corner in Chapala as you turn N toward Soriana. Of course Walmart has air mattress's etc.

Muebles del Lago in Chapala. I don't recall the name, but as you enter Chapala, just before the stoplight, there's a store on the left that has many mattresses.

Maybe Hensley knows what will be available at the bazar/yard sale for the casa de ancianos.

C & D is probably the best place since he specializes in furniture and all grades of mattresses. I think his prices are very reasonable.

He is located on the right past Super Lake and past Panino restaurant in the small strip mall. He's a nice guy to do business with.

It's a small furniture/mattress store (endcap store in small strip center) in Riberas,on the right side of the carretera heading to Chapala from Ajijic, roughly the same area as Arden, etc. Their place is small, but that's only because they don't exhibit every model in every size in every fabric. Have nice leather furniture too. Friends ordered a special high end mattress from them and are very satisfied. Delivery was in a few days and prompt.

You can also try Suzy's Consignments....on the Carretera, across from Roberto's Restaurant. She lists current inventory on her website, Suzy's

Soriana has pillow top mattresses by Homestyle at moderate prices.
Sam's Club usually has the best quality for the money.
The three furniture stores in Chapala will also have some selection of quality vs. price.

C&D does have some nice things, but in the recliner area I found him a bit high, he wanted $1,300USD vs. $500 at Arden. His were "imported," when I asked where from he said Canada which I thought was a bit odd.

I thought the prices were great at the store in Chapala. As you go into Chapala - at the light where you normally turn left to go on the main drag (or right to go to the church/lake) - it is the first store across the street on the right at the intersection. I was happy with the product./service/delivery -

The street address for Arden is Hidalgo 81 in Riberas. Phone: 765-3472
Driving east toward Chapala, you will pass Ajijic, San Antonio Tlayacapan, and La Floresta--- Riberas will be the next village.
Although the Arden's street address is Hidalgo, it is actually the same street as the Carretera, so just look to your left (mountain side) and you will see a bright red building next door to a bright green building--that is Arden. You can't miss it because of the bright colors.

C&D Furniture is in San Antonio on the Carretera on the right side (lake side) of the Carretera. It is close to the OXXO in San Antonio in a small strip mall. Address: Carretera 119-A&B, Chula Vista-San Antonio. Website: www.furniture4ajijic.com.
They are closed on Sunday. Open 9:30 - 4:30 Mon.-Fri. 9:30-2:00 Sat.

Mueblera del Lago--Madero No. 443, Chapala. 766-2019 website: muebleradellago@hotmail.com.

Buena suerta!

If cost is a concern, look at either Walmart in Ajijic, or at Mega Store across the parking lot from Costco in guadalajara. I think these prices would be better.

And C&D furniture store takes Canada cheques!! We bought our beds there three years ago and they are super comfortable. It's a pleasure to deal with Cassandra and David; they are super people. The furniture they import from Canada is Palliser and is very good quality - well worth spending a little more for it.

WOW!!! They have Palliser furniture!!! My 2 leather sofas from the US are Palliser and are the most comfortable and well made sofas I have ever seen. In the US they give you a 5 year guarantee on frames, construction and leather. Nothing but quality. OK folks, please please don't bash me because I said the best, but I'm so totally satisfied with them.

Palliser a " top quality " line ? Not even close. From a perspective of 37 plus years buying furniture (for a major urban department store), and manufacturing furniture in North Carolina, Palliser is viewed in the industry as upper low end or lower middle line furniture with a fashion direction that speaks to the Canadian midwest prarie customer. That said, neither is there any thing particularly wrong with Palliser furniture or their customer base. Value, comfort and looks are in the eye of the beholder and user, and John's enjoyment of his sofas is all that's required for a rewarding "furniture experience". The insider's test for a successful furniture sale is whether the product remains in the customers home for the first few months after the sale. A five year guarantee, however, means nada today re: quality. The industry has been reeling for a number of years now, since long before the current world economic meltdown, with much furniture manufacturing going off shore to the Orient, and furniture retailers shutting their doors in unprecidented numbers. The guarantees, sales promotions, no tax, no interest for years, 50%, 60%, 70% off, etc., etc., etc., are all part of a bid for survival among the remaining furniture retailers and manufacturers. Me, I'm just glad I made it out sane and relatively solvent and found my way to Lakeside several years ago.

I "second" Suzy's. You might be able to find top quality chairs for less than new junk. Just keep checking and let her know what you're looking for. She gets in new stuff on a daily basis.

Thanks for further replies. I found C & D and Mueblera del Lago and a few more but of course they are closed. Will wait until tomorrow to check them and Suzy's & Arden out. Sorianna didn't have a very large selection or a matching pair but Walmart had a good choice but no where to try them out.
