I am thinking about bringing down a Polaris ranger to travel around the towns. just for grocery shopping and going to lake chapala society on account of the narrow streets and to save gas. I can probably get license plate. it has Head lights and break lights, turn signals. every thing needed for plating in US

You will fit right in as many ATV's here which are similar. It may be classed as a second vehicle so may need to be in a different name than the car coming with it but others may know for sure.

No problema. Better than a golf cart and you'll fit in nicely with all the 100's of Tapatios that quad around here on the weekends. Go riding with them.
Keep your US plates on it since it's under 1000cc's. When I crossed the border,someone was hauling 4 quads on a trailer so they aren't a second vehicle.

That doesn't seem to stop too many folks. They're all over the place. Mostly being driven by folks who don't have the sense to wear helmets, even the open face kind.

The most likely vehicle on the receiving end of "serious accident" in an encounter with a car is going to be the quad. No roll over protection, no seat belting, no real protection of any kind.

By all means if you want one, bring it with you because they are way more expensive here. And make sure you have lots of life insurance.

Yes, we both have bicycle helmets and wear them because a fall off a bike onto the head is quite dangerous.

I'd rather look ridiculous (to you maybe, not to anyone who understands open-vehicle accidents and head injury) then end up with a serious or fatal head injury from a simple fall from a bicycle or quad.

I don't think you are thinking of the same type of ATV the Polaris ranger is 60" wide and seats three smaller people across. and has a cab on it. with windshield wiper and all. Also checked with Lewis & Lewis and they will insure it.

I do not know of anyone who has had problems in Ajijic with quads, but I have been stopped by the police in other towns and recently paid a bribe because some of the quads did not have license plates. Not likely you will encounter problems along Lakeside unless you hit something with it, then you may have a problem. I would stay off of the carretera as much as possible. Plates and insurance a good idea. There is a Polaris dealer that is easily accessed from Lakeside, he is on the far south side of Lopez Mateo near the Sam's and Walmart on the other side of Mateo.

They also seem to cost almost as much as a Smart, too. So, why not buy a Smart that you can leave town in for a long trip? I drove from Chapala to Ajijic today and saw five Smarts, only one ATV.

Had I reason to get a newer vehicle it would be a Smart, or, a Honda Fit.
