Spot
What do you need to start a new phone line in a house that does not have one if you are the renter? Thanks in advance!

El Cartero
1 to 10,000 pesos and someone connected. First go to the telmex office, take a number, passport and utility bill and see someone at one of the desks on the left side. Then comes patience and as a last resort what I, and my neighbor, had to do once frustration set in.
SunshineyDay
What did you and your neighbor do?
ComputerGuy
First, ask the agent or owner if there was a phone there before; this will determine if service is available. Second, look for phone outlets in the wall. Third, hit the TelMex office and ask to get a number. And see what they say. Riberas and outlying areas might have issues. Joyfull
If you haven't rented this house yet, put in the lease that a working phone line must be installed prior to lease starting. My neighbors had to wait 7 months to get a line. You are not in Oz anymore.
Natasha
It's been 3 1/2 years, so maybe out of date....BUT..... Rented house, which had been vacant for a while, did have phone line, but with leftover debts incurred by previous tenant. I went to TelMex and asked "since we have internet (cheapest) with you, can we get our service transferred over and a new phone line in OUR names installed?" Answer: yes, and since you are an internet customer there will be no charge (otherwise would have been 2,000 pesos). And yes, we can do it right away. (San Antonio) Good thing about having phone in your own name is for all the things that need "proof of residence", plus no hassle with landlord if/when you leave about oustanding charges on "his/her" line. So if there is evidence of previous phone connection in your new rental, suggest a visit to Telmex is a good place to start.
Xena
I had a similar experience to Natasha. Two years ago I rented a house with no phone service and previous renter had left outstanding charges. I went to Telmex, got a new number in my name. I also had them install new phone/modem outlets in a different room. Two days after I ordered it, Telmex showed up and did the job. There was no charge. When I recently moved I asked if I could have the same number at the new house. No problem. The transfer was done in a few days. It cost me 300 pesos to keep the same number and was worth it. Spot
This is a new place, has phone jacks but no one has lived there, so there is no utility bills, just a lease, crossing fingers and hope this works. I would hate to move in and then find out if this would be a problem. Owner lives in Guadalajara and said we have to get our own phone.
Al Berca
Depending on your location, you could be in for a multi month wait until installation in new construction. New construction is now being sold and rented with no phone lines because of the difficulty in getting them and the long wait. The good news is that if you are responsible for ordering phone line and phone number that phone number is owned by you and may be taken with you on your next move. In the meantime, make sure you have new batteries handy for your cell phones. And get in to TelMex today. Do not wait.
