cooper, we are surrounded by mexican holidays. maybe when get on the board some of us want to tune out & discuss other things. after all what kind of connection would i have to someones elses independence? personally i have nothing against spain, for me i dont care who rules. who do we congratulate if almost everyone here is an expat?

Cooper, there was so much joyful celebrating going on the past several days with many foreigners joining in. In fact, it was impossible to not be caught up in it. Typing VIVA MEXICO on an expat forum does not show appreciation for Mexican independence nor build connection with the Mexican community. Next time, get outside and join the celebrations.

cooper there are holidays here practically 24/7. usually the most important matter is "what stores are open", "what streets are blocked", & "when is it over". i didnt go out on my own independence day.

Oh you mean, like when we went to the plaza fro the grito on Monday night and had pozole with the family on Tuesday? Or by building a connection with the Mexican community by having lived here for 40 years, been a naturalized citizen here for 34 years, married to my Mexican wife for 37 and having raised my 3 children that were born here and have all now finished their college educations ? Is that what you mean? Does that meet your criteria for connecting with the Mexican community?

cooper, thankyou for telling it like it is. some folks are "know it alls" they have thier own agenda, IMO quite foolish. they have no concept of anyone or anything who exists outside of that small box. as you know, the mexicans care less if expats celebrate independence day. my mexicans friends usually are concerned w/the same things i am: traffic, transport, store hours. no, i dont telephone them to say "happy independence day!!! lets build connections". (spare the rhetoric zena, its not a post grad student exchange program).

Cooper, I still do not know why you felt the need to scold forum members for not posting Viva Mexico on an expat forum? That is the part I do not understand.

No one scolded anyone. It just seems odd that none of the participants on this forum opened a thread about Independence Day in their host country. A small acknowledgment to the country and its people.

What I don't understand is how you made the assumptions that you made about a person you know nothing about.

I made my assumption based on the information I had (none other than your post) and not "getting" your message. The title had a finger-wagging quality to it. It was as though you assumed not posting VIVA MEXICO was somehow a failing. My contention is that how people celebrate the day (or do not) is up to them. Of all the ways to note and celebrate, posting on this forum is the least of it.

Viva Mexico was simply a clue and not an exhortation. But now that I see how you process thoughts, I'll ignore your memes from now on.

Your just mad because not everybody didn't fall for your clever deception - everybody knows Mexican Independence is May 5 - Cinco de Mayo.

i also forgot the 16th sept is not independence day. it must be another kind of political holiday. cinco de mayo is not as festive here as it is in the U.S. btw, many mexicans do not celebrate july 4th. but they take may 5th very seriously in the south west.
