Watch Repair in Chapala

If anyone is looking to repair their watch beyond the usual battery replacement and strap adjustment, I thought it worthy to mention I had good luck with my favourite "Senior's" watch (it also tells me what day it is) at a small hole in the walll place in the llittle laneway off the Chapala Plaza. He is more of a mechanic than a salesman, and he usually gets it back to you within fifteen minutes, and is very reasonable. He also seems to take pride in his honesty.

The owner of the former joyeria beside the Chapala bus station passed away a few months ago, and was unable to effectively fix my watch shortly before that, although I got charged for the service, cleaning, etc.. The guy at the Wednesday Tianguis gave it a try but was also unsuccesful and never charged me.

I thought I would mention this because people that can repair watches are becoming a rarity.

I have a Timex that was given to me as a gift from a now-deceased friend. It has stopped telling anything but lies to me and it has caused me to be late for some appointments  . I have used the watch repair place in the Chapala Plaza in the past and he has been helpful in changing batteries, etc. This time he didn't charge me because he said that it was an internal mechanical problem and that Timex manufactured the watch in such a way that it cannot be fixed. He checked the battery and said that it was fine. I'm glad that he was honest and charged me nothing but I was sad that Timex would make a watch that would have to be replaced. Such is life.

I like the watchmaker that the OP mentioned and I use him when I need one.

The only watchmaker that I know is the one who has an office somewhere in Chapala, and also comes to the Ajijic Wednesday market. He has been able to fix most everything for me, with the exception of my Timex. I have no idea why. (it's not the end of the world as it still keeps perfect time. It's just that the stopwatch buttons don't always work..)

I don't know if I would promote the person I saw at the Chapala Plaza to "watchmaker" without knowing his credentials, but he did quickly fix an internal problem on my watch (not a TIMEX), whereas the guy that shows up at the Ajijic market on Wednesdays took it apart but could not fix it and therefore did not charge me as mentioned in my original post.

I've not tried this guy in the Chapala plaza, but I recently had Gustavo at Tempus Watch Repair fix a Bulova that no one else had been able to fix. Gustavo has been around many years and is located at Miguel Martinez 544-B, next to the Chapala bus station. He even offers pickup and delivery. So he is another option, and specializes in antiques and fine watches.

I've tried several watch repair places including Gustavo in Chapala and the only satisfactory one is through Daniel jackson the jeweller in Ajijic. He takes the watch to a jeweller in Guadalajara who does an excellent job. One year guarantee.
