Have/had esophageal spasm?

Recommended Posts

This is related to acid reflux. If you have or had this, I would like to know how you dealt with it.

Eat very little at a time and try not to eat anything that is very dry, It is awful and seems to come and go. When it starts I stand up and breath deeply but it is awful even saliva does not seem to be able to go down.

I take Nexium and omeprazol but I am going to see a specialist again to see if there is anything else I can do. I have the silent reflux and did not know for years I had it. I also have a chronic dry cough. What a pain!

Thanks, bmh, eggs and potatoes often are the things that seem to bring it on. I have the same experience with saliva, or water, or anything. Do you also have pains that come and go during the "seizures"? How long do these periods last for you? Mine are usually around 15 minutes though one was for 2 hours. That one was quite frightening! The literature says people who experience these often have chronic coughing and much clearing of the throat. The doc gave me motilium and inhibitron. He had me take a blood test for the bacteria H. pylori. He's talking about using a scope down the esophagus to see if there is a narrowing or scar tissue or other things. I wonder if ultra sound could look at the esophagus effectively.

I would highly suggest getting the upper GI endoscopy, this will tell you exactly what is going on. I have had several over the years due to acid reflux/gastritis and a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia can also cause esophageal spasms. I had surgery for the hernia which helped quite a bit. I watch what I eat, nothing spicy, too hot or too cold, nuts, etc. My last endoscopy cost 5000MP, I wanted to be sedated. I found that if you do not request they do it while you are wide awake. It was NOT a pleasant experience. In the States I was always sedated and did not even think that here you have to request.

People also need to know that taking long term PPI's (nexium ,etc.)does cause bone loss, something I was never told, and am now paying for it.

Good Luck

Yes Dr. Valenzuela is excellent.

The only thing that stops GERD is an operation- fundoplication. I had it performed in Boston and was

covered by my insurance company. I had to go through a test that involved having your reflux evaluated

by an acid test. A tube is inserted through you nose into your stomach, and they can tell how much reflux you are experiencing. That was quite an experience itself! Anyway, I passed the 'test' and had

the operation. It took me about 2 months to return to normal, and I would do it again, absolutely.

That was done 7 years ago, and I have never regretted my decision- Nillson fundoplication.

I usually have them about twice a year. The pain was so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. They always lasted about 20 painful minutes..then sometime they'd wait for a few minutes and hit me again.. I finally discovered that if I had a bite of almost anything...it stopped it. Guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.

I had an endoscopy and the doctor removed something I had in the throat at a later date, the surgeon told me I had chronic laringitis due to the reflux I had.

I hate the idea of another surgery but I will get checked again soon..

I never had spasm past 15 minutes, two hours would be really scary and painful. Yes you should have an endoscopy to start with. This is how they diagnosed the slent reflux I had as I had a persistent cough but never heartburn or never felt I had reflux..

They lightly sedated me for the endoscopy and I liked that part..
