Driving in Mexico City

For anyone planning on driving to and in Mexico City, you should be aware of a change made to the days on which a car can be operated within the DF.On 3 October,2013, the law was changed. No out of state or foreign vehicle can be driven on any Saturday. The last digit of your plate number still determines the day on which one cannot drive between Monday and Friday. You can read the details at www.sedema.df.gob.mx

In addition, no vehicle 15 years old or older can be driven in Mexico City on Saturdays UNLESS the vehicle has passed the DF emissions tests.

The new rules (not passed in October 2013 but in June 2014) apply not only to the Distrito Federal but also to the entire metropolitan area, including the Estado de México, Puebla, and Tlaxcala.

Also....driving in Mexico City it not for the faint of heart....take the metro.

If you haven't yet taken the Metrobús, it's far, far better than the Metro. On the Metro, you are underground seeing nothing. On the Metrobús, you are above ground in dedicated, fast, no traffic lanes and able to see your surroundings. It will take you almost anywhere you need to go in the city--including both terminals at the airport, and you can bring your luggage. Airport Metrobús Line 4 leaves from the Buenavista station. Here's a link to see all the lines and stops: http://www.metrobus.df.gob.mx/mapa_L1.html

This is the option we use to drive our car around the área and it works quite well for us so far.

"What Does the Tourist Pass Do For Me?

The Tourist Pass is a document that allows the vehicle whose details are recorded in the document exempt from the restriction of movement imposed by the No Hoy Circula program in the Federal District and the State of Mexico, traveling at any time and all days requested.

WHO CAN GET A PASS?

The Tourist Pass can be obtained by citizens with vehicles model year 1994 and later having foreign plates and various other States of the Republic to the State of Mexico, Federal District, Hidalgo, Morelos and Tlaxcala."

Our car is new and is in my wife´s name. [Mexicana]

It is unfortunately no longer true that cars from 1994 can travel in Mexico City on Saturdays. The car must be model year 2000 or newer.

The reason AlanMexicali can get the pass is that his car is NEW. Whose name the car is in has no bearing on the new Hoy No Circula regulations.
