Monte Cristo/ Arileo

With all the talk about Monte Cristo, decided to go on Saturday night. Still the same nice furniture and bar inside. Had a new waiter, who bent over backwards to please, but needs to learn the biz a bit more, lol.

My momia shrimp (bacon-wrapped) was very good, as were the veg and a cute little side-salad with fresh fruit (incl thinly-sliced pears!). The veg, however, were barely warm, and I'm not even sure if they were supposed to be hot. You can see the kitchen from most tables, and there is a lot of activity for service for two. The shrimp dish would have been perfect if it had been brought sizzling on a hot plate, with the associated smells and popping heat from the bacon.

Soup of the day was onion/mushroom. It was very expensive at 59p, and came in a smallish French oinion soup bowl: pretty, but far too small for the price. And while it tasted fine, it was nothing special... it seemed that the mushrooms had been added to a lacklustre onion soup.

The other order was tuna in capers. It was done nicely, and was a good-sized piece of fish. Ironically, while we were told the menu at the table, and the menu board outside were the same, they weren't. So be careful when you are being asked about your meal; make sure they bring the big board in (eg. the tuna dishes were different, and there were not desserts listed on the printed menu, among other items.

At $169 for seven large shrimp, and $149 for the tuna, with the $59 for the soup, the price is higher than average... sort of. Will I rush back? No. But if they can maintain a consistency, I would tell others it might be worth a try.

Oh, a couple more things: homemade tortilla chips were served as starters, with a mild salsa (which was actually too runny for the chips), and they offer a four-glass jarra (jug) of limonada for 69p, vs small glasses at 25p. So it's worth getting the jarra.

We went to Monte Cristo on Friday night.  New chef, new wait staff,  menu completely changed, e.g. no more fresh fish, and prices noticeably higher.  Service was good and so was the food but I missed the seafood items.  Went to El Ancla a week ago, where Alejandro the former Monte Cristo chef went, no one there but us two but the food was as good and menu as varied as it used to be at Monte Cristo.
