Lakeside’s large expat retiree population should be pleased to hear that construction of a first-rate hospital in the area finally appears to be on the horizon.

The project being put together by private investors in partnership with the Chapala government was revealed Wednesday, March 25 at a press conference held in the office of Mayor JoaquIn Huerta.

That's the part of the article that anyone can see without a subscription. I'm glad for the posting hint, because it did make me go look to see what was posted. Hope it happens.

Hey, I pick up a copy of the Guad Reporter for 17 pesos every week, and being a print person, I enjoy it. (I could also read it online, but I like print!) And, I view it as important to support this local news source, whether you buy it in print or read it online. It is not exactly the New York Times, folks, but it is our local rag, and they do a good job IMHO. It is not an easy task. Journalism is a big part of living in a free society. The Guad Reporter reports without censorship. Oh, yeah, they have editors, but it is a free press, for which I am thankful.

To begin wth, one can subscribe online to the GDL Reporter for only $30 per year and that system works very well. Usually you can read the paper on Friday afternoons online. It is a very environment friendly and cheap way to read the paper.

Putting some sort of huge development like in Sambrit's link into an area with woefully bad roads, shaky water supply and electricity and mostly no sewers doesn't strike me as either very smart or very possible.

Putting the Reporter story together with Sambrit's link indicates to me these are two separate projects.

Particularly when I look at the involvement of the Chapala Municipal government in some aspect involving maintenance I am skeptical. These are the people who have been doing such a brilliant job of maintaining the roads and other infrastructure in all of our towns. Draw your own conclusions as to their competence in maintaining anything other than higher taxes.

And then there was that obvious sweetheart deal over the parking, how well did they do with that?

Riberas has no sewers or treatment, what do they plan to do about that? The Chapala government has allegedly been trying to get a sewer district together for that area with no success. Will it finally happen now?

Sambrit's link talks of a huge development which also includes a hospital. Two hospitals in this area? Is that realistic? Looking at both proposals, though, it appears to me that the hospital in Riberas is the most likely of the two.

At this point if anyone has any doubts that we are now a full fledged suburb of GDL this should lay those to rest.

Yes there is a detailed account of this hospital, mall, etc. by Lisa Jorgensen. Beyond cultural changes, good or bad, there are the "other aspects" be dealt with? Such as roads, sewage, water, all those things that are there to support. Need more security? If this really brings in all these people, what will the Carretera be like then?

If we are talking of the proposed hospital in Riberas, it really isn't that large, 42 beds. The GDL Reporter didn't say exactly where but I would think the only large vacant property is that one on the north side where the materials yard is now, just on the west end of Riberas pretty close to Mirasol. The lot is described as 3500 square meters, that's the only one I can think of that is that size.

I believe this is a different deal altogether from that pie in the sky mega project Sambrit linked to. I could definitely see this one happening but we should fight any project that does not have a very well defined and sound method of handling wastes and does not widen the carretera to provide a turning lane at minimum.

And that doesn't depend on a septic tank system, a facility like this is much too large to use one of those without polluting the heck out of the ground water.

I simply do not trust the Chapala government at all in matters like this. Look what happened with the pay parking scheme.

Now I'm wondering if this Lake City monstrosity is what they want to put at the top of that equally monstrous slash and burn development up the hill side above the Libremiento.

The Lake Chapala Reporter article made it sound like they were two different projects (the hospital and the megacomplex).

The hospital planned by the Sun Star Group of Guadalajara could be lakeside or mountainside but looks on a scale with the area. I think this could be a welcome addition to our medical services Lakeside.

The megacomplex, according to the article, has already purchased a site near the Villa Montecarlo Hotel in Chapala. Isn't that the one on the lake as you are entering Chapala from the west?

The artists rendering of the complex shows it right on the lake. It looks completely out of place, a slice of Las Vegas dropped into a Mexican pueblo.

A two story building on the south side of the carretera in Riberas del Pilar was built and never finished. It stands there now, for sale. It was to have been a hospital, I believe.

Ah, but now there is a big sign on the second floor of this place, announcing a "BLUE Hospital". A hospital!

IS it the one being announced in the Guadalajara reporter? If so, I am pleased to see the project come back to life. It does have parking in front, as well as on the streets surrounding the building, and is conveniently located between Chapala and Ajijic. Who are the prime movers, I wonder?

RV if I'm thinking of the same building, it has signs out front indicating they are hiring for yet another restaurant.

I think this is a different deal entirely, a considerably larger structure and it states they'll have parking for 230 cars underneath. From the article it seems pretty clear that construction has not started on this one.

The "Blue" hospital doesn't sound like this one. It was stated that construction wouldn't start for another 3 months at the earliest.

If you're an on line subscriber, you may want to post a comment to the story suggesting that the location needs to be specified. This isn't clear at all at this point.
