Costco Kirkland Butter

Recommended Posts

I'm waiting to get a jump start on my holiday baking and desperately need Kirkland butter. Someone on a closed thread said they would be reporting if they see any tomorrow. If anyone happens to be in Costco and notices that the butter has returned, please send me a pm or post it here, I need 5 packages=10 pounds.

To answer Gringal's question. Kirkland butter cubes stay true to the 4 oz size, has a lower moisture level than Mexican brands, it definitely tastes better as well as being economical.

With regards to the moderator's worried LDL level. I'm not eating all of it by myself but I do have others counting on me for their holiday treats.

How would you compare it to the Danish butter, rather than the Mexican butter?

Went again today at the Galerias and they are still out. No cheese either.

What butter are you using locally that is similar?

It's in the fridge at both Walmart and Superlake. It's "Lurpak" in the silver package and comes from Scandinavia. Both salted and not. I like the flavor better than the Mexican butter.

There are some good cheeses at the counter in the back of Superlake.

Oooh, it's been a long time since we had a butter thread. I'm always glad to see one pop up.

Lurpak butter is fantastic, but YIKES, the price tag will give you heart failure. We used it for a number of years--when the price was 17 pesos per 200 grams--but switched to Kirkland and have never gone back. Lurpak is hovering around 40+ pesos for 200 grams right now. Kirkland is 98 pesos for 2 pounds (about 900 grams).

Another poster here on Chapala.com assures us that the Kirkland brand butter is actually made by Tillamook. I would have sworn it is Land O'Lakes. Either way, it's a dense, creamy butter that is far better than any Mexican butter--IMHO, even better than Lala. Like bmh, I only use unsalted.

I called Costco this a.m. and asked about the butter. They've ordered it, they just don't have a date for it's arrival. The conversation went along the lines of..."Will it be here in a week?" Costco, "I don't know, we don't have a date." "Will it be here by Thanksgiving?" Costco, "Yes."

Here's to waiting.

Given their size and clout, it's certainly possible Costco uses more than one supplier to make their Kirkland-branded butter. They would have all kinds of good business reasons to do so.

We're down to our last two sticks. Almost panic time.

We are now buying Lurpak but I would really like to know what happened to the Anchor butter from New Zealand. I haven't seen any since last April.

Unfortunately, the French Bakery is just around the corner from us...fabulous bread calls for fabulous butter. That combo is my downfall. I can resist just about anything else there but their bread is an addiction.

I asked Pancho a week or so ago if he could get Anchor butter and he said "no".

The one between the La Huerta Plaza and (what used to be) Don Pedro's Hacienda Restaurant...actually fronts onto the old Don Pedro's patio. Has umbrellas out front and a number of tables to sit at and have a coffee and a pastry. They have the small baguettes but also the small round loaves (bolas)which are my undoing. Patrice and Sophie are wonderful.

I would suggest that you get there by 10:30 if you want bread...otherwise you'll have to settle for a croissant or a Napoleon (mils feuilles) or a fruit tart...or...or.

Disclaimer: I will not be held responsible for the extra pounds you put on by knowing that this Pastry Shop exists.

Ok we live close to it. I am not hooked and that is a good thing

Acutally I am in San Cristobal de las Casas right now where we have a French baker who does old fashion bread and two French pastries shops that are excelent but pasties are not my thing , bread is and the one in Ajijic I do not care for.

I am safe until I go back to France and there between the bread the buter and the cheeses I am done with.

Years ago I heard that Kirkland butter was made by Land O Lakes - no matter who makes it, it's good butter.

Interesting. A web search reveals Aurora Organic Dairy as the manufacturer, back in 2007, for CostCo's Kirkland signature brand organic butter, but of course two things: one, the stuff we get here isn't labelled organic, and two... can one "dairy" really be responsible for manufacturing butter for every CostCo store?

Haven't found anything to compare to Anchor. It became hard to find after Christmas last year and haven't seen any at all since last spring. I, too, queried Superlake and got nowhere. They don't know why it's not there anymore and don't seem to care. After shopping there regularly for 15 years, this is a little annoying. The Organic Valley (I think that's the name) isn't bad and Kirkland's ok but that's a problem now too. I have a little trouble paying over $100. for a pound of butter but no basis for comparison - surely that's a bit extreme, even for an import?
