thevalerieleigh
Sadly, my 2 1/2 year old dishwasher has died and the repair is going to cost 2,400 pesos. Seems like it makes more sense to buy a new one. I don't mind going to GDL to buy but am wondering if anyone has recent experiences with pricing and selection on dishwashers. I know Costco and Tio Sam's sell them but am wondering if there's an area in GDL that has lots of stores with options. I know that seems to happen with many other items. Hoping someone has some ideas where I can find one quickly and without paying a king's ransom. Thanks, in advance, for the help. Valerie
gringal
My dishwasher suffered premature death and the quote for repair persuaded me to buy a new one. At the same time, the installer recommended the following: For those who do not use water softener, the water here is so hard that it is necessary to clean it out about once a week with a cup of vinegar in a sanitizing cycle. Since I have done this, the dishes come out much cleaner and the dishwasher seems happier. Whatever that means.
bmh
There are a few stores to shop for them but by the time it is all over you are better off with Tio Sam becuse of the service for foreign brands or Costco. Figure out the model you want and check Tio Sam Costco and Liverpool or Sears when they have sales.
ComputerGuy
The one most people talk about, and I've been there, is Ekar de Gas. Some stores in the chain have bigger selections. People seem to agree they have good prices. Locations: http://ekardegas.com.mx/Sucursales1.html . I don't recall a street full of appliance stores... There are also three large stores in Chapala that carry appliances: Coppel; Muebles America; and another big one on the mountainside of Madero: Banco Azteca. bmh
They have good prices as long as you want what they have in stock. There are a bunch of stores. I nver bought anything there because they never had what I was looking for but their prices are good,
Mainecoons
A two and a half year old dishwasher is nearly new. Unless yours is congenitally flawed, and instead it was just a random failure, it might be worth it to fix it. Are you certain your water isn't helping cause problems with the dishwasher? I'd check that. You're not going to buy a superior quality dishwasher for about the $200 dollar equivalent of this repair.
Go Solar
Tio Sam's gets big thumbs up; make sure to ask them about all models (and prices) avail - they have a very wide range and you can get similar models to what they show on the floor (and show you first....) for almost half the price if you ask them and tell them your price range. Home Depot is also worth checking, they've really ramped up their appliance business and have some pretty good deals from time to time.
thevalerieleigh
Thanks for the input so far. Seems the Touchpad and Control Panel are what went bad. Cristobal, the repairman from the Appliance Repair store on Colon, says it happens all the time and he has 4 on order right now. He says it happens across the board, regardless of make. Dammit! So, it's not a water issue, apparently but a programmed obsolescence issue. They can get the part here for $2400 pesos, I can get in the U.S. for $129 USD. Seems expensive to me.... I'll check locally and head to GDL next week if I can't find something reasonable here. Thanks again for the info. Valerie
ComputerGuy
I've seen several refrigerators with exaclty the same problem. And my own clothes washer, fancy-dan thing... got rid of it and went to a used machine with the old-fashioned knobs and no problems since.
jrm30655
Probably a CFE problem. I have a meter on the AC line and it varies all over the place
osuespirit
I had the touch pad and control panel go out on my American stove. i ordered it from Sears in the US and had a friend bring it back with her. No problem getting it installed. Works perfectly and was much cheaper than having it repaired by someone here that might have killed the stove. AlanMexicali
Touch pads are connected to the processor board and they seem to go bad on occacion in some units if the units are not properly grounded, which is common here. Also some circuits that are not grounded properly and are on the same circuit breaker as a motor sometimes get a jump in voltage when the motor starts up and that can damage electronic circuits on occasion [mainly parts in the power supply]. If part of the power supply is damaged other connected componets fail or appear to fail and replacing them is not the problem but the power supply is usually bad. Control panel is the processor, why would they need a processor and a touch pad, aren´t they sold as 2 ítems that plug into each other? Someone said it could be a CFE problem and this might be part of the reason so many electronics get damaged here with no proper ground on the machines. 2 common problems why newer machines might fail. Voltage spikes and improper gounds. A disaster waiting to happen one day. 2 prong plugs do not have the same power supplies as a 3 prong plug machine. TVs and stereos etc. are 2 prong and no ground is needed in these units, but dishwashers and other units with motors and different type power supplies do need a proper ground to protect them. There are reasons some units have 2 prong plugs and others have 3 prong plugs.
thevalerieleigh
Don't I know!!! After CFE had a surge 2 1/2 years ago which blew out my brand new dishwasher along with many other appliances, we invested in two of the whole house surge protectors. We keep a Kill-o-watt meter in the kitchen where most of our appliances are located to see it swing from 103-127 regularly. I don't doubt for a minute that CFE is behind this but proving it and holding them responsible has become impossible. We're still working through PROFECO in GDL to get payment for the items destroyed in the massive strike as well as trying to get a Transformer for our Barrio that can handle the load and stop the huge swings up and down in voltage. Thanks again for the help. I checked Tio Sam's locally and didn't like the units there ranging from 4500-12000 pesos. Will try a trip to GDL next week. Guess that means our BBQ celebration tomorrow is going to be on paper plates. ICK! Thanks for your help, Valerie
eagles100
There are also three large stores in Chapala that carry appliances: Coppel; Muebles America; and another big one on the mountainside of Madero: Banco Azteca. I checked Chapala and didn't find any dishwashers. I bought locally and ended up with trouble. They didn't tell me the dishwasher wasn't new. They brought it in a box, basically pretending it was new. When it didn't work right, they refused service and told me to contact Maytag. Their words were basically, We sell, we DON'T service. Maytag did come twice but in the end, they told me it's not a new dishwasher and they wouldn't repair it. I threatened the store with PROFECO and they fixed it. I won't name the store but they are in Riberas.
ComputerGuy
You certainly don't see many dishwashers in this neck of the woods. Except for the two-handed kind.

I'll say it's on the same side of the lake. I found Tio Sam's to be expensive. I'd definitely check out places in Guad. but I don't have a suggestion, sorry. Home Depot sounds like a good place to start. When I checked Costco, they didn't have any.
daisy2013
If I recall Liverpool may be having their big sale in July. We bought ours there and it was quite a savings, it was the best price around.
bmh
I have a dishwasher with a nob I bought 13 years ago from Tio Sam Guadalajara and it is still woking like a charm, I have another one in Chiapas I bought on sale at Liverpool down there 6 years ago and it works like a charm. I think it is a question of luck sometimes you buy lemons like we did when we bought an electolux 6 burners stove at Liverpool. The worst piece of crap we have ever bought, you just never know. gringal
Gringa, I like your suggestion but where is the 'sanitizing' cycle on my dishwasher? Our new one is a lower end Maytag and it has a "sanitize" button. Next best thing would be the "hi temp" wash, or probably anything that sloshes the vinegar around. The problem with this water is the white crusty stuff that clogs up the works; the vinegar gets rid of this. It's also good for cleaning that stuff out of automatic coffee makers. bradshoe
We add half a cup of white vinegar to every load. Makes the glasses come out much better. We have purchased two kitchens worth of appliances from Tio Sams. We asked a Mexican friend about going to Guadalajara to buy appliances and he said he'd done that and came back to Tio Sams as they had the best price. Always ask if they can give you a better price. Yes, ask for the best price, and if you say you're paying with cash rather than credit card, the discount gets even better.
Semalu
I had similar "tough luck" attitude from Ecker. Bought a fridge and when it was devlivered it had one side bashed in. I said I wanted it changed and they said tough luck. Profeco works but be prepared to wait up to a year for resolution. In the meantime, you still need that appliance. If Liverpool and Fabricas are having their sale this month, they offer good selection, slow delivery (faster if in stock) and good service. If Tio Sam does not have what you want in the Ajijic store, go to their main branch on Niños Heroes, near 8 de Julio. Anything you find in any of their stores will be delivered here at no charge. If you find the same thing for less money elsewhere, they will match it.
