My father had his recent cataract surgery in Cabo San Lucas. He was assisted by a medical tourism provider. His surgery was last January. Before he was diagnosed with cataract, he began noticing halos around street lights at night and glare from bright lights during the day, his view became even more opaque as time went by. That's the time we decided to have it seen by an opthalmologist, who carried out some tests and told him he had cataracts. We just couldn't take the waiting line back at home for cataract surgery that's why we decided to have it in Mexico.

You can compare the cost of cataract surgery in Mexico here: http://www.placidway.com/cost-searchlist/Mexico,Cataract_Surgery,Eye/Lasik_Care/.

Been researching a lot when my father needs to have his surgery. You can find more cost online.

My surgery for both eyes was done by Dr. Vargas at Puerto del Hierro about two years ago. Don't remember the exact cost, and the cost may have changed. He comes into Ajijic Clinic on Tuesdays for eye exams. I was happy with him.

I had mine done by Dr. Vargas at Pto. De Hierro a few years ago. I like him very much. He does all the pre-op at the Ajijic Clinic except 1 or 2 , then comes to Ajijic the next day to remove the patch and check your eye. He saw me for follow up for several weeks. I LOVE that I only had to go to Guadalajara that one time for the procedure.

Dr. Robles in Guadalajara is real good. He did my retina March 2013 and cataract surgery in Dec 2013. You may need a referral to get to see him. He offered me the option, for cataract surgery, of $18,000 pesos at his clinic Alta or $23,000 pesos at the eye surgery center in Guadalajara. I chose his clinic and there are no problems.

I have had cataract surgeries and serious retinal surgeries at specialized clinics in Guadalajara, where only eye surgery is performed by the same surgeons that you will find at Puerto de Hierro. Why? Because the clinic is very specialized and equipped and the staff are too. As such, the overhead is less and you may find that you can save by using such places. The one I prefer is Clinica Santa Lucia, near the Plaza Terranova, just off Av. Terranova. Ask your Oftalmológo or Retinologo.

Hi there I am responding to this old post. I have been to Ajijic and am considering retiring there. In the meantime I desperately need to get my cataracts removed etc. (not eligible for Medicare yet). Do you still recommend this clinic? I noticed on a post from 2012 you recommended Dr. Guillermo Avalon at the Institute Avalos. I need to come down in the next couple of months to get the surgery and then recuperate in Ajijic.

You should check with Dr. Avalos, or with the Clinica Santa Lucia, as it has been some time since I was a patient. My results were good and I have had no problems since the surgeries for retina repairs and cataracts.

You might want to check out the Red Cross in Guadalajara (near parque Morelos and with far more options/facilities than the Chapala one),.... good price/quality.  According to a Mexican friend, they have a really excellent eye doctor.  She was able to cure my friend of something that they had not been able to fix upnorth (after 70 years of trying to find a solution).

I don't know the name of the doctor, but it is a lady and I suppose that there are not that many lady eye doctors there....

I bet that the price is affordable too and it is not that difficult to get there (the Macrobus, one block from the Guadalajara bus station, will take you there in 5 to 10 minutes).

And bare in mind,..... in Mexico, MANY times, even medical costs can be discussed (with the doctor).
