We are coming down for six months and wonder whether we need to bring some of our favorite brand name items, or whether we can find them locally. I feel a little silly asking, but we do get used to certain things and there's only so much room in the car!

Food items:

Best Foods or Hellman's mayo
Heinz ketchup
Grey Poupon mustard
Cheerios
Post Shredded Wheat'n Bran
De Cecco or other Italian import pasta
Better than Bouillon soup bases
Adams, Teddie, Laura Scudder's, or other natural peanut butter
Nabisco cookies and crackers
Pure Balance dry dog food
Beneful canned dog food
Pupperoni dog treats
Non-food items:
Dawn dish washing liquid
Unscented laundry detergent such as All, Cheer, Tide
Scott single ply toilet paper

Many of those items are available and you will recognize them. However, you will find that Tide is ACE in the familiar colored box. Many other items will have Mexican versions which are similar, and in some cases even better in taste and more economical. If you buy the imported brands from the USA, you will pay the price. Try the Mexican brands with confidence; they are very good.

Almost all the stuff on your list is available (other than unscented detergent; Arm and Hammer had it here for a few years, but Mexicans seem to prefer scented stuff like that. Especially single-ply toilet paper), except maybe Pupperoni... I don't have a dog, so don't know, but when I did, I know that lots of types are available at WalMart. Super lake even has the Better Than Bouillon, although at 99p it's not cheap.

Superlake grocery store is one stop shopping for most of things on your list. If you haven't seen it, it's a major import grocery store that we're lucky to have. If Pancho doesn't have something that you want, he'll special order it for you. Might not be quick though.

Not legal to bring in dog food...but that is only if they catch you at Customs. If you are driving it is doubtful to be a problem. Flying...maybe try to bring in some dog treats (I always bring them in) and a little dry dog food to add to what you get here. Costco sells their own brand of dry dog food which is made by Diamond. You must get try switching your dog to it before you get here.

I have not seen any of your dogs food items available here You would be wise to bring at least enough to mix in with the food you decide to use while he is here The fact that Diamond makes Costco food does not mean that it is made with the same ingredients or amounts so it could be totally different.

I, too, tried to find Scott tissue and unscented laundry soap as any other products usually cause me quite a lot of irritation. I did find a brand of tissue that seems to be OK and not scented, but the laundry soap is another story. They do have A&H with the blue cap that doesn't seem to irritate me, but it's not entirely unscented. But only a faint scent. I had to bring back unscented other stuff from NOB though. PM me if you want more specifics.

A lot of us get CostCo toilet paper precisely because it is unscented... but single-ply it's not. In fact, they thickened it so much a couple of years ago I had to add an extension to my bathroom wall fixture, to make it fit.

One brand that is much lighter than CostCo's, and has no scent, is White Cloud.

Down there I loved La Sierra beans and was excited to see them here in TX at HEB - wow, what a disappointment, same company, same beans, NO flavor. I'm sure they've had to cut out all the "good" stuff that makes them special in MX so they can comply with the FDA or whoever. Oh, and did you see, the same guys after telling us for 30 years that whole milk was killing us? - well, turns out it's actually good for us, the premise for bad mouthing it was totally flawed. So, when are my beans going to taste better?

SuperLake has most of what you want but the prices will make you think about trying Mexican products. I love Cheerios but at $7US for a small box I only buy them sporadically. But Special K has a factory in Mexico and they are really cheap for a 1 kilo box--about $4US.

We purchase Cheerios at Walmart and they are not $7.00 for a small box. I think it is something on the order of $3.50 or maybe $4.00 U.S. The peanut butter you are asking for is approximately $8 to $10 I think for a small bottle. When we drive we bring all kinds of these types of food back with us and we have never had a problem ... even brought lots of can dog food because it was much less expensive back with us and was not aware that it was not allowed.

Mayo here has lime added ....I've never seen NOB 'regular' mayo anywhere Lakeside (maybe someone else has? ) .

It's not a strong lime taste but it is different . I've gotten used to it.

Buying imported food items over 6 months will be pricey. New foods are part of the experience , no?

(Though I'd likely pay any price if I could find real Hummel hot dogs)

Mayo here has lime added is one type. Mayo with Jalapeño is another type. Regular mayo is also available everywhere. Hellmans, Kraft, and several Mexican brands, all made in Mexico and less expensive than in the USA, especailly the huge sizes of a couple of brands at Costco.

I have to step in about the mayo thing, being a big mayo user since I was a kid (Dad used to say: "At least it's a lot cheaper than butter, so go for it"). Every so often you can find Kraft mayo without lime, for instance right now at Soriana, but not very often. And yet, it's low fat, not regular.

I don't know where AlanMexicali shops, but almost all mayo here has limon it it, from Hellman's to whatever. SuperLake carries several varieties, imported, without limon, and very expensive.

And as to the $7.50 Cheerios, yes, that's what imported Cheerios cost, maybe more.

In SuperLake, savyy shoppers know, the soup aisle has two sides: imported and national. The same Campbell's tomato soup on the national side costs 24p; the imported one on the other side costs 55p. And in the cookie aisle, imported Oreos cost three times more than the Mexican version. Although I must say with Oreos, there is a huge taste difference. That doesn't happen very often.

But I can also say that over the years I've learned to adapt to everything from shampoo to oyster crackers. It's always a little rewarding to find something that I realize is a perfectly acceptable, maybe even better, replacement.

Cheeerios here is not manufactured by General Mills but GM might be bought out by Nestlé here, who knows, because here Cheerios locally made is Nestlé and tastes the same to me. It costs, last time a month ago at Walmart 2 480 gram boxes for $40.00 pesos on sale; regular price $29.00 pesos per box, medium/small sized, or $1.75 USD. If you can tell the difference in taste I commend you. They have 3 kinds, Cinnamon Apple. Cinnamon. and plain.

You may want to consider a trip to Costco (or use one of the local services); We got a two (531 gr each) pack - multi grain Cheerios for 112p, they also had honey nut. We also buy Fitness in a two pack (integral and fruit) for 99p; both are Nestle products. I usually buy non-lime Mayo at Soriana but it is the store brand. Since we eat mayo added to other things, lime or not doesn't seem to make a difference.

I just bought mayo ( albeit light) without Limon, at WalMart.

They also had Miracle Whip and a couple of other kinds of Mayo. Previously purchased mayo at CostCo and the jar was so big it took us forever to get through it !

Don't know about Soriana, as it is too far away for me, but I would think that between WalMart, local tiendas, SuperLake, El Toritos, the Gourmet Shop in Laguna Mall, CostCo and Soriana, you can get everything you need.

Peter Panaderia in Laguna Mall has freshly made natural peanut and cashew butter if you get there early enough. Toast their apple walnut bread and spread some of that on it and it is truly yummy !!

There are plenty of dog food places along the carreterra in Riberas and lots of local vets to get your dog foods. I am sure there will be something suitable.

As another poster said, it won't be EXACTLY the same, but close enough.

It's not going to be that foreign for you to have to wonder what you are eating.

Wow that was fast! Lots of good info, thanks everyone. Now I remember the mayo with lime, it was good. Pupperoni gets confiscated? I don't know what they put in it but it's the only treat my dog likes. According to Yucalandia, which I've been using as a reference (does anyone recommend a better site?), unopened dog food is OK, so I'll take a chance. http://yucalandia.com/answers-to-common-questions/what-can-i-bring-into-mexico-mexican-customs-rules-the-article/ I didn't realize Pure Balance was Walmart brand. Does the Walmart there sell it? My little guy is astonishingly particular about his food; I also think wheat or corn makes him itchy, like scented laundry soap makes me itchy. I'm hoping I can switch him over to chicken hearts; when we were there in 2013, at the Monday tianguis there was a woman selling hearts and livers still attached to each other, the most delicious chicken livers I've ever had.

I didn't mean at all to imply that we are not open to adventurous eating! As a foodie, it's one of the things I love about Mexico, and we both enjoyed trying various street foods (with no ill effects). But there are always certain things we grow attached to, or should have for health reasons. Guess we better save some space in the car!
