La Mision

2 of us had lunch there today. Lovely building and atmosphere. We had the rib eye (300 gram) at 117 pesos each. Each had 2 gasses of very good Chardonnay (50 pesos each)-434 pesos. Add 20% tip -lunch for 2 about 38 dollars. We would normally have that for dinner but heard about the great steak and had to try it. The profit from our lunch will feed a local child for 6 days.

The service was a little slow as they have only been open a few days. We certainly didn't starve waiting for our food as they kept bring fabulous appetizers. Waiter Marco a delight.

Have no connection to the 5 churches involved but a great meal and a great cause.

This is an update. As of yesterday, Sept 18, when four of us had lunch there, it was still very much a work in progress.

Good food, but a big problem with timing of serving a table of four in stages with large gaps in between. The other couple were served their entrees so long after we were served that we were completely finished by the time their chicken arrived, and we ate slowly.

Still mopping the floors and hosing the patio well after opening so customers had to walk through the water. This was long after opening time.

No soap at all in the ladies' room.

The excellent burger meat was way over salted; barely edible and not a healthy option

The good bread slices serving as a bun were so small that the burger hung over the edges.

I know this is early days, but the person in charge has had enough restaurant experience to know that the above problems need solving soon.

The food was so good that we may return after they've had a chance to work things out.

I wish them well since they are sponsoring charities.

It's good to see customers supporting this endeavor and posting praise for the food and service.

Sometime soon I'm hoping to see how Pera, the owner, has been able to turn his efforts into help for the Mexican mothers. This will encourage even more customers.

Thank you for your kind comments. Pera is not the owner. La Mision has a 5 year lease and after operating expenses, passes on part of the profits to help fund Operation Compassion which is the feeding ministry run by Tom Music. Second it has taken on the responsibility of funding a program which we have not named but is most important to me personally and that is to provide the funds to train and provide the opportunity to the mothers of these children who have not the education, training or skills to provide for their children. We have 3 programs that we are working on. First thru the leadership of Tom Music and the kindness of women who have donated sewing machines etc. we will be operating a seamstress business. Tom when he first decided that his purpose in life upon retiring was to feed the poor, in Mexico, first went to Mexico City where he was met by a wonderful family of a member of Tom's church in Kentucky. Their business was like that of Oh Shirt here in Chapala. They have offered their services to come and train the women here. The mother and 2 daughters were here last weekend and if you go on our facebook page you will see pictures of them eating in the restaurant.

We have another lady locally who has offered her services to provide ongoing supervision after the training, she is an American with yrs. of experience and loves to sew. WE are now actively seeking a permanent space for this operation to begin. there are conditions etc. WE have thought this out well with rules etc. to insure that these women succeed.

Second is training women to be domestic maids. again with rules to protect those who will hire these woman and to assure their growth and development as good mothers.

Lastly is that Chef David has offered to provide a one week training course to teach these women how to make bread and jams. We have found a kind supplier in Guad that will build us an oven that is really 4 ovens piled on top of each other. His normal price is $14000 pesos but because of who we are he is lowering his price to $9,000 pesos. These woman will then be able to come daily and make their products and then sell them in their barrios. They can have their children deliver the products and even teach their daughters to help them.

The # one problem with all of this is time right now we are going 24 7 we are all working more then 12 hours a day between Tom doing his job at the soup kitchen, then coming to help at the restaurant. David leaving like this morning at 3:00 AM to go to Zapopan to buy fish as because of the hurricane their is very little fresh fish available and he doesn't want to serve frozen anything. So he has to be there early to be able to get what fresh fish is available. I am the errand boy and have to pick up the supplies that we can get locally and be back at the restaurant by 11:00 AM.

the restaurant is the key to making all this happen it is the goose that will lay the golden eggs to make these projects work. We believe that with our location the staff that we are building that we will earn your continued support and with La Mision all profits go to fund these projects we will succeed. FYI We are working daily more then 12 hours and we do not earn one centavo. We are doing it because it is the right thing to do and we believe you will also share the goal of helping these children and their mothers.

What we could use is you being our eyes and ears if you know of any place that we could use for one of these training centers, plus any experienced Mexican Mother to help in mentoring these women. We need people who speak Spanish. Thanking you in advance for your kind cooperation.

In my post suggesting a report on La Mision's progress I did not mean that someone connected to the restaurant should report here on the forum that's intended for restaurant reviews by diners, questions and info on food in general. Whoever wrote this above post is not giving us a progress report on its success, but only repeating its good intentions.

Try the forum for restaurant happenings, but even that sounds wrong for lengthy calls for help in carrying out your mission. You do have some people who are supporting your efforts, but I believe you're abusing the space offered by Chapala.com.
