virgogirl Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Mopping is a national pastime in Mexico. That said, I had gotten on board with the sloppy mops that are so common everywhere, but I gotta admit, I'm over it! I don't like to touch 'em or wring 'em. Does anyone know where I can get a sponge mop? In 2011, I lucked out and got an excellent mop at a bazar that you twisted to squeeze out with this lever on the handle. I had strings like the regular slop mop, but they were attached into a nice little round ball. That thing was a dream, but I wore it out. I ventured into Walmart tonight (cross fingers- -ward off devil). No sponge mop. They did have this swiffer product that had a washable cleaning head on it. I may go back for it if I can't find a "real mop". Thanks for your referrals.
Ginger Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 A sponge mop will get worn out really fast on the tile floors with all the rough grout. I bought a bucket that has a place on it to put the mop head into which wrings the water out when you push down.. Edited to add that I haven't seen the type of sponge mop you mean but maybe someone else has. With the bucket, you don't have to wring it out by hand.
virgogirl Posted May 15, 2013 Author Report Posted May 15, 2013 I hear what you are saying, but the floors I have now are not rough, so I am hoping to find one. Yes, I suppose that bucket with the hole to squeeze the mop out....last resort, not a bad idea, i've seen them..... Thing is, I have gone native on so many things for going on 3 years. Like i still do the majority of my all my laundry by hand and hang it out. I just started doing the laundromat here in Ajijic in the last few monthes, and bring it home and hang it out. ohhhhhhh, once I even dried a load. WOW! 2 years of handwashing, I needed a break and now I'm compltely over these slop mops. Diagnosis: Late onset culture shock!!!lol
Ginger Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I would imagine the sponge mops if you find them will be expensive, though.
bmh Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I bought a sponge mop somewhere in one of the large stores, it lasted about a week. The Spanish mop are not bad if you wash them every time after you mop the floor.
virgogirl Posted May 15, 2013 Author Report Posted May 15, 2013 I may try that Swiffer rewashable thingy I saw at Wal-mart. But I'd pay a good price for a sponge mop if you could guide me to one. I'm very economical, but when I want an item such as this, I'll give gold. This is an historic building but the floors are good, not nthe usual crap I've had in the past. I think it will work.
sparks Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Sponge mop? .... they never worked well anywhere unless you dribbled a little of your coffee. Get a real mop or use a rag .... and if you don't want to touch it get a mop bucket with a wringer. Mop buckets with a wringers tend to be crap down here but you can find a good one. I have no problem hand wringing a mop
bmh Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Considering that I do not go to Guadalajara for that kind of think I bought the sponge mop either at Walmart, SUperLake or Soriana but that was a while ago. It had the metal thing to squeeze the sponge.
virgogirl Posted May 15, 2013 Author Report Posted May 15, 2013 Mega.. GDL right?? I'll be in the city tomorrow for a party. Maybe I'll bring a mop home on Chapala Plus. I'll check Sorry Anna and SuperLake. never been in there. If they have a mop, I might be impressed enough to shop there occasionally. We don't have a Mega at lakeside anywhere do we?? Yes, the metal thing to squeeze the mop. I'd kill for one. LOL Maybe I'll be disillusioned and return to using the slop mop. In other houses I had a patio, drains, easy way to wash it out , hoses. Here, in this upstairs working girl apt. there is nothing to make that routine easy.
FHBOY Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 OFF TOPIC: Thank goodness we don't have a Mega at Lakeside. SORRY Oh, if you don't like touching the mop...wear gloves, those you can buy anywhere! Who was it who said, "It is much easier to wear slippers than to carpet the whole house."?
ComputerGuy Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Sponge mops and refills last seen at Home Depot. Too dusty here to work well.
More Liana Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Ummm...a 'real' mop? Depends on where you're from and what you're used to, I would think. Here in Mexico, the cotton string mop is a real mop. The sponge mop would be an anomaly.
El Toro Furioso Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I bought a sponge mop somewhere in one of the large stores, it lasted about a week. The Spanish mop are not bad if you wash them every time after you mop the floor. But the Spanish mop must be very expensive because it has to be imported from EU-country Spain.
sioux4noff Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I had tile floors in Texas, and the sponge mop worked fine. I have finally decided I want one here as well. To clean up spilled coffee, I would use a cloth, not a mop anyway. I've broken a couple of those little things that go in the bucket to wring the mop. I may instead buy one of those high-faluting janitor buckets with the wringer plate. And with all due respect, I don't care if y'all are happy wringing out string mops. I'm not. I think Home Depot has sponge mops, Mega where I live does not (but that is at the coast). And if I can't find one here soon, I plan on bringing one back from Texas, with replacement heads.
gary0131 Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I have a O Cedar Pro sponge mop http://www.ocedar.com/p/pro-scrub-roller-mop (like new) that I never use because I have a maid with a brand new replacement sponge I will sell for 200p. Email me at gary0131@yahoo.com or PM me if interested.
gimpychimp Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 http://www.vileda.ca/en/mops/string/ Maybe a Vileda mop and bucket is the kind of mop you had in mind. With this one you twist the strings into the wringing gizmo which hangs on the top of the bucket. I think I have seen these at times in Walmart.
bmh Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Sorry this is what we call the mop from here in France, they probably scame from Spain. In Chiapas my cleaning lady use a broom and a rag . She put a whole in the middle of the rag and puts the handle though...probably the ancestor to the Spanish mop.
carib Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Sorry this is what we call the mop from here in France, they probably scame from Spain. In Chiapas my cleaning lady use a broom and a rag . She put a whole in the middle of the rag and puts the handle though...probably the ancestor to the Spanish mop. This is the real European mop and works just great. My family in Italy use it all the time. You can use an old tower. They are the best.
ShanConshue Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 We are driving down this weekend.. Do you want me to bring you a mop from NOB? We are bringing a bunch of our stuff, but I'm sure we can find some room in the van for stuff you need. I'd Pm you, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet LOL
Floradude Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Like you when I moved here in 2003 I said I would never wring out a mop by hand. After a couple of years of trying to find sponge mops and refills I gave up and I now wring out my mop like a native.
phxfunguy Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 We are driving down this weekend.. Do you want me to bring you a mop from NOB? We are bringing a bunch of our stuff, but I'm sure we can find some room in the van for stuff you need. I'd Pm you, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet LOL Hover over the person's name on the posting, when the info box opens up, move straight down to the box that says "send message" and click on it...helpful to know how to do this.
cedros Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I thought I would need sponge mops (partly so I wouldn't get wooden furniture wet and spoil the finish) so I imported some. I now prefer the string mops. If you get a bucket with the basket for wringing the mop out you never have to put your hands to the wet mop.
TioBob Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I have been using the Vilea mop for 9 years here. The material is synthetic and wears well. You can buy replacement heads almost everywhere. I buy a longer than standard length and it holds more water. My cleaning lady only uses the string mop and wrings it out by hand. We both get similar results.
sioux4noff Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 I'm going to check home depot. But the one with the wringie-thingie woul suffice, too.
