Recommended restaurants Lakeside

Without looking through this whole forum for recommendations on restaurants, I thought I'd ask.

We arrive in 2 days for our first visit with the intention of moving Lakeside as soon as our properties sell in Canada. We'll be there for 14 days.

That said, what restaurants are worth a trip?

We'll be eating out most of the time as we'll be out exploring a lot.

We could eat at a few upper scale places but are looking for good quality and a decent price.

We're renting in Ajijic but are renting a car so can go anywhere Lakeside.

Thanks in advance

Ajijic Tango's for dinner in Ajijic

Sunrise for breakfast in San Antonio

Lake Taco for lunch at the Libramiento by the Pemex gas station

I second Julie's recommendations and would add:

Tabarka for seafood.

El Figon on Consituccion if you enjoy craft beers (a rarity in México) and good food.

El Zapote in Chapala, Viva México in San Juan Cosalá and/or Mario's in San Antonio for authentic Mexican food in a comfortable, clean atmosphere.

You'll doubtless receive many other excellent recommendations. You'd do well to pick up a copy of John Keeling's guidebook to local resetaurants, available at the bookstore at Plaza Bugambillias (next to El Torito market), Diane Pearl's gallery on Colon and elsewhere around town, for much more info including addresses, operating hours, etc.

Enjoy your visit to Lakeside!

Lunch at José's on the pedestrian south side of the Chapala Mercado Publico, for anything from a bowl of chili to his grilled salmon.

Breakfast at 'Delicias', between FC hardware and the INM office, on Hidalgo in Chapala.

An evening molcajete at any one of the seafood restaurants at the east end of the Chapala malecon; then walk the malecon and centro this week, as it is Chapala's fiesta patronal, with celebrating every evening until 1:00 AM. Lots of fireworks and music, ice cream and street food; not to be missed.

And let's take the short but lovely drive to San Juan Cosala where you should have a drink at sunset at one of the lakeside restaurants then go into the village to dine at Viva Mexico. Ask Augustine to suggest what is best that night, get one of those and order Chile en Nogada. Only place that offers that local speciality year round.

This still remains my most missed restaurant in Lakeside.

(though Roberto's cream of poblano soup is a close second.)

Would love to know what you think after you've completed your tour of restaurants recommended in response to your posting. "Northernguy" seems to like everything but there's definitely a degree of "risk" in some of his recommendations. You're probably wise, during your short stay here, to avoid the San Juan Cosala "tourist strip" restaurants but definitely "Viva Mexico" right in the town of San Juan Cosala is worthy of a visit. If there's one single "hint" of a good restaurant recommendation here at Lakeside it's "how long they've been in business". Restaurants fail here pretty frequently and as is the case the world over....they fail because they have no idea what they're doing!

One further note: "Northernguy" made an obvious omission in his list of recommendations and it's a hard one to ignore. Ajijic Tango is and has been one of the most successful restaurants to ever open here at Lakeside. In all categories they shine with the exception of perhaps a little too much "enthusiastic conversational buzz" at busy times. However, that kind of noise is usually an indication that people are enjoying themselves! It's unfortunate that sometimes restaurant recommendations in this type of forum are more "political" than "honest".

My fave's are Peacock Garden on Colon. Good food Lovely ambience.

Dona Lola for breakfast or lunch. Mexican and American food. No ambience but good food, good service and good prices.

Bruno;s for lunch or dinner. No ambience but best steaks, ribs and liver and onions in town.

I enjoy many of the others but these are my often repeat places.

Delicias in Chapala for breakfast. Jose's in Chapala for a very tasty and reasonably priced lunch/dinner.

La Nueva Posada in Ajijic for breakfast and lunch. Good food and nice setting on the lake and they speak Canadian.

Lake Taco and Ajijic Tango.

Piedra de Iguana in Piedra Barrenada. Viva Mexcio in San Juan Cosala.

Our current "Top Five", in no particular order, are: Tabarka, Cairo Cafe, La Una, Ricki's, and Simply Thai. Tabarka is the only one out of walking range for anyone staying in the village.

For a spectacular view of the Lake and middle of road food: El Risco on the hill above the fish shacks out San Juan Cosala way.

Don't you wish you had more than 14 days?

OMG RVGRINGO, you can bet we do wish we could stay longer but we'll be back.

Why did you say this about my recommendations? Are there some of these that you had a bad experience with?

Now I must ask why you said this as I have no financial interest?

Trattoria di Axixic,

This restaurant is on the Caratera close to Hermenegildo Galeana. We had some great meals there when we went in March of this year. Alex is a rogue but a great host

Then there is the Restaurant Jardin Plaza, the restaurant with the green umbrellas near the square where you can people watch to your hearts desire!

Los Nopalitos de Ajijic, is a nice choise if you want to eat some good mexican food. try "Carne en su jugo". the place is very informal which is reflected in the prices (very reasonable prices) is over colon half block before malecón in the left side. also the Chilaquiles are deliciouse.

We like to take visitors to Viva Mexico (Tia Lupita) in San Juan Cosala for an authentic Mexican food experience and friendly service and the mural of the history of SJC. So, I second the motion on that!

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is that LOTS of restaurants here have no great views despite being near the largest lake in Mexico, and lots do not have a lot of ambiance (Tia Lupita as Mexican art on the walls but no view) AND the restaurants with a view are not reliably good. If readers have a fave for the best restaurant with a view, I'd like to hear it. I kinda like Las Iguanas de la Piedras (I'm sure I have that name spelled slightly wrong) at the west end of the fish restaurants in SJC. Does anyone recommend the ones on the cliff above the SJC fish restaurants? Does anyone go to La Nueva Posada and sit out in the garden for the view?
