Just got the following back from my folks in Ontario.

"I don't know anything about this. Maybe it is a rumour."

So, my folks don't seem to know anything about it and they're usually pretty much "in tune" with what's going on.

I have an account in Canada and I got no such email. I also hang at digitalhome.ca and no one has mentioned this. Shaw has curtailed their Home Away From Home program, for no reason that is discernible yet, and are charging 50% more if you have two locations. And the new satellite will not give us anything here at all, so don't go changing your LNBs or anything. But that's about it.

Well, a second round of verifications and my providers have heard absolutely nothing about the CC situation. However, things at some point - and they have no idea when - will get worse, due to technology changes we will no longer get Shaw down here as noted above. Again, they have no idea when, but I've already made one change from Dish and invested heavily in Shaw, I'm not excited about being dragged through another knothole backwards.

A final note and then we'll just wait I guess: My guys say - the CRTC (Canada's communication arm of the government) has ruled that Shaw can not broadcast south of the Canadian border. This came down on June 3, 2013. So there are lots of rumours flying around about how, if and when this will happen. Likely this is where your information about the cards came from. Dealers could be trying to cover their tracks by accepting Canadian cards only.

So, you be the judge. I told my guys that on a lighter note this can have a huge impact down here, imagine a whole lot of cranky old folks with nothing to do but watch TV and NO TV? - could get ugly early.

Actually, the rumour started that the U.S. Government was not allowing Canadian satellites to broadcast over the border. It just keeps getting better. There are no such laws or rulings. And ironically, the birds from TeleSat send out a lot more than just Shaw signals: all kinds of comms stuff is up there on a multitude of birds, and you can't stop a radio wave or a sat beam from broadcasting in specific areas. You can prevent it from being picked up, but that's it.

The CRTC regulates what is broadcast and/or available in Canada. This is probably due to action on the equivalent regulatory body in the Americas, where people are receiving the service. Does anyone really know?

What a revolting development! (Did Jimmy Durante say that?)

Yes, I am invested in Shaw and a prisoner of PBS. Not to mention the music channels, which I also enjoy and I just spent moolas on getting my new TV hooked in thru my BOSE speakers. Paradise may be lost!!! But I hope not!!! Do any of the rest of you use Terese Koch, Ed Linfoot's dtr? She is my source. Always liked Ed who looked like a lumberjack on Monty Python.

Ya know, I would be happy going REALLY legit, and I would pay for this, but if I can't get PBS and CNN and the music channels thru Mexican TV sources, I am not a happy camper. Yeah, I know, I am not totally with the local culture, but hey, it is a small vice, especially in today's world where the internet spans borders.

Fortunately, no, the FFC cannot regulate this. The can agree in principal with Canada as to certain guidelines, but that's it.

Telecable has (US) CNN in standard definition and in their digital package you can get CNN in HD.

Now how about The Fox business and the Fox news Channel. They are all available in HD along with hundreds of other HD channels meant for the US audience via DirecTV USA service with an 8 foot dish lakeside.

Streaming is OK, that's how I get most of my radio programs from up north. But I like HD television in 1080 P on a large LCD screen, so until we have better bandwidth, I'm sticking to Satellite and digital cable for most of my HD video programming.

Oh DirecTV even broadcasts in 3DTV.

Ew, I've tried watching those web channels... nasty, tiny, fuzzy most of them. I, like Pete, prefer my big-screen hi-def.

I'm guessing that ComputerGuy cannot promote himself on this forum. So, I'll do it for him. The ONLY reason we still have Shaw Direct is for sports...and if push came to shove, they are available on the Internet like MLB.com (major league baseball) for a charge of course.

What we do is download programs to the computer and watch them in High Definition on the large screen TV... WHEN WE WANT TO. Therefore, we are not tied into programming schedules. We can pause them to cook dinner or whatever.

ComputerGuy set us up with the programs and knowledge of how to use "torrents"...which are free. I am also downloading books via torrents as well. It's not hard to do at all. Movies too.

ComputerGuy's charge is very reasonable and it is a one time cost. We already had the HDMI to HDMI cable to make the connection between the computer and the TV.

Easy?...you betcha. No rain fade, no misaligned dish, no monthly payments...the only thing that would affect your viewing pleasure is a complete electrical outage.

Back to the original question: we pay Shaw Direct through our American credit card, which has a billing address set in Laredo TX. No problems; and no notice from Shaw that this will be unacceptable.

We only have one service address registered so we have never been part of the Home Away from Home program.

We do have a Canadian address on our Shaw account -- it is never used for billing though, that is all done automatically against our credit card.

We are doing the same except our address to our credit card is in AZ and we have heard nothing.

Shaw is a canadian company and canadian law does not permit to sell its programmes outside canadian jurisdiction. However if you own a home in Canada you are allowed to have a receiver to use outside Canada in your RVR or mexican home. You will pay your bill in Canada from your canadian adresse. If you want to continue to use Shaw in Mexico you just have to find somebody with a canadian adresse.
