This is definitely going to get an early trial, maybe this coming week. Sure hope they add really good "French" fries instead of the usual around here of too thick, mushy and greasy.

I'm glad these fine ladies found a good place to land and we can walk to it as well. We used to eat at Pedros years ago and like it and the folks who ran it.

She serves a choice of potato salad or chips and dips with the burgers. No fries so far.

Best fries around are Yves' IMO. Chimi's on 16 Septiembre are good, too: starts with a real potato.

But Early Bird uses russets for his fries - no competition at all with Chimi's.

Hubby and I had lunch at Amy's on Tuesday. He had chili-cheese nachos, I had the stuffed mushroom burger. Both very good. BTW, it isn't a stuffed burger -- it's a burger patty with a topping that tastes like stuffed mushrooms -- yum!

There are a full page of burger choices on the menu. At the bottom of the page it says you can sub a chicken breast or a brat on any of them. Back page of the menu has some chili choices, as well as chile verde burritos.

Amy is planning to start offering some specials soon and is considering opening for breakfast. She is still putting all the pieces together. She has done an amazing amount in just two weeks.

We liked the open-air ambiance of her new place, and she now welcomes dogs.

We had the burger and it would have been good except that there was salad dressing on the lettuce and it was sweet; it also made the bun soggy. The potato salad was also sweet, hence I'd like to know why some people from the US have the custom of putting sugar into everything savoury?

Now, I'm not trying to be critical or negative, but how can restaurant owners learn what people want if they don't hear also what some of us don't want? Some of us are from Canada, England, the European continent and don't like everything to taste sweet.

To the person who thinks tacos are healthy???? Fried carnitas, chicharrón (fried pork rinds), shrimp fried in batter - made soggy in sticky sauce and wrapped in a corn tortilla? Good beans also have pork fat - yummy, but not necessarily great for the heart. The grease-sticks are called flautas, BTW. Chile con carne here consists of lumps of dry Mexican pork in a sauce and I have to say Texas does it way better.

Some of us are from Canada, England, the European continent and don't like everything to taste sweet.

Sounds like Canamex is leaving soon, returning to the bland side of the country. Frankly, the only really, really good food in most of Canada is in Québec; especially Québec City. In the west, the good food tends to be Chinese, and in the far east it is Lobster and Oyster of any ethnic origin. Now I am drooling in the keyboard again! :)

True, lots of excellent places in Quebec City. But also lots of excellent places across the country. Was pretty annoyed with Anthony Bourdain's new show on CNN the other night when he went to "Canada", but the whole show took place in Quebec. Ridiculous. And the foods he was eating (outside of some maple syrup and pate) was in no way representative of either the country OR Quebec. The concept of fine food, maybe, but not the food itself.

Back to the topic...we tried this last week for the first time and, against our better judgment, we both ordered hamburgers instead of one of the chili dishes. Frankly, the reason there are so many different topping combinations for the burgers is to mask the taste of the burger itself. I dare anyone to eat a naked burger there. Its consistency is comparable to a chicken nugget that's formed from various chicken meat. We didn't care for the texture at all. If there were a burger competition, Early Bird Cafe would win hands down!

The potato salad is okay, but too dry for me.

We will go back, though. The atmosphere is nice and we like to support Amy. Might try the chicken breast next time.

Questions for Amy:

Are the burgers (meat) hand made by the cook or the usual store bought pre-packaged processed stuff?

Are the fries made from real potatoes in house or the usual store bought frozen crap?

I like to enjoy food made by people who are passionate about their culinary skills. I can heat up all the other stuff at home.

Amy told me that that meat came from Ajijic Meat Center. Mine seemed to be a preformed patty.

The hamburger meat is formed by the cook to order, no pre-formed frozen burgers here. Amy doesn't serve fries just homemade potato salad or chips and homemade dips. If the potatoe salad is too dry, please tell Amy and she will add more "secret sauce". And if you don't like something you order please, let Amy know and she'll make you something else. We want everyone to enjoy their meal. Thanks, Faye

Good to know. I didn't find Jeanne's reference in the least way rude or uncalled for. I thought it a good question and appreciated Faye and Ellie's answers. It's nice to know Amy goes out of her way to cook. I'd like to see fries too; unfortunately I can't eat them.

El bartman, you have your posters confused. It was El Cartero who asked the question and Jeanne felt the need to intervene for some reason. As usual, Faye provided a gracious and fully responsive answer to a question that might have been framed a bit less aggressively but was a good one nevertheless and I appreciate the answer.

Jeanne, this board has moderators who are quite able to determine when a question is totally rude. Thanks.

Well, other than Travis no one else seems to find the sweetness a problem. I meant to add that there was a slightly sweet compôte of jalapeños that was very good and unexpected; I just don't think everyone wants a sweet dressing on the lettuce on the burger or in the potatoes.
