El Ancla Restaurant

We had dinner tonight at El Ancla and it was excellent and reasonably priced. It is west of La Canacinta just past all the topes next to La Reserva on the south side of the road. At one time Tajoe Burger was in the space.

The portions were good and the food was excellent. The service was some of the best I have had lakeside.

They serve fish and shrimp al gusto, chicken breast, arrachera, rib eyes and hamburgers. We had the shrimp and it comes with a choice of two sides - french fries, rice, vegetable, or salad. One of us had the fried shrimp and the other two had sauteed shrimp.

The fish was 120p, the shrimp was 110p. The arrachera and steak were either 110p or 120p. Sorry but don't remember the price of the hamburgers but they had several different types. They also had a fish & chip special with Mahi-Mahi for 55p but it was a lunch special and might change daily.

Nothing but good to say about it. Hope you try it because they may be having a hard time with the bad act (Tajoe Burger) they are trying to follow.

This is going to be a regular on our list of restaurants for sure! We were there today, husband had mahi mahi grilled with vegetables and french fries and I had the cheese sirloin burger with french fries. The food was very good and the service was excellent. Besides this it has been remodeled from what it was when it was Tajoe Burger. It is unrecognizable ... it is an extremely tasteful and comfortable environment. The colors chosen for the wall paint, the paintings that grace the walls, the large picture windows giving a beautiful view of the mountainside (they are new), the comfortable chairs and tables with table clothes and cloth napkins, the comfortable sofa and chairs tucked in one corner for those that want to just come in and have a glass of wine or beer or mixed drink and visit for awhile or check their email (in the case of someone's whose email is out at home) there is free wifi and the very attractive bar area which has been newly built. Eric is also planning on in the near future building a palappa upstairs and putting the large t.v.'s upstairs for the people that want to watch sports. Obviously, we were both very impressed and very happy to have a restaurant of this quality so near us on the West side. Check it out .. you won't be disappointed.

The Anchor Bar & Grill (Ancla in Spanish.) Located on the carratera heading West on lakeside of the street about 2 miles from Ajijic.

They have a full bar and a good beer selection, beers are served with chilled mugs.

The menu is on a chalkboard. It is limited but covers the bases. They have a variety of fish and shrimp choices, grilled chicken breast. 2 steak cuts and several types of hamburgers.

We started with Cesar salad for 2 at 70 pesos and the waiter prepares it fresh tableside. It was very good!

I had Mumia shrimp – at least 8 or more prawns stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon. They were perfectly cooked. My wife had the grilled chicken breast – she said it was moist and of a generous size. Both came with rice and grilled vegies but we had the choice of french fries.

A nice surprise was that we were given a ‘palate cleanser’ of lime sorbet between courses.

Adrien is a bilingual waiter who is very friendly and excited about the restaurant. He told us they offer bananas foster and peach flambé for desserts as well as Spanish and Mexican coffees, also made tableside. He says to check the Guadalajara Reporter weekly for their ads and discount coupons. They are open Tuesday thru Sunday from 11am to 8pm. A great first experience and we will be back!

We love Ancla. We've been going there since Erik remodeled and created such a nice atmosphere back in January. The menu was mostly burgers - although good, we prefer a bit more variety. We went with friends at Easter as they'd added the current new items. Adrien did his Cesar salad along with flaming peaches for desert and we all shared some flaming coffees. Adrien explained that he used to work for Armando and learned table side service from him. Erik has stocked a nice bar including good Martinis with great olives.

Recently we were with friends and the question went around 'what's your favorite restaurant'. All the usual places were named and we had to admit that until Ancla we enjoyed lots of places here but never really had a favorite. We do now.

Is this restaurant dog and/or smoker friendly?

Are you trying to stir up trouble? JK

No. I asked a simple question. Is there a problem with answering it?

Some people prefer dog friendly and/or smoker friendly restaurants. Some don't, and it's nice to know ahead of time which is which.

So, how about just answering the question and people can make their own decisions about going there?

The menu sounds good.

Jalisco law prohibits pets in establishments where food is prepared and smoking in restaurants is also prohibited. That is old news and I thought everyone knew it by now.

I thought that I had indicated that I was kidding. I enjoy your posts and am sorry if I offended you.

However, it will likely get people going as these topics aften do.

Not offended that easily. But I'd still like the answer, okay? We all know that the "law" is more honored in the breach than in the observance, so it's just a matter of what the policy at this place is, in practice.

People on here often get their shorts in a twist over matters in which no amount of argument will persuade them from their original position.........so what's the point? I think that sensible people simply go to places where they're comfortable. Back in San Miguel where I lived before moving here, things reached critical mass with gringo marches and the whole hot dog, but the authorities came down hard, whereas here, nobody seems to do much enforcing of anything.......so it gets down to practical choices for patrons.

In San Miguel de Allende, dogs are not allowed in any establishment that serves food. No exceptions, none. The law is rigidly enforced.

I suspect that the reluctance here to answer whether dogs are allowed in El Ancla suggests that they are indeed welcome.

Regardless of the degree of enforcement of the 50,000 peso fine possible, it is just polite to leave your pets and smokes at home. It is very difficult for a Mexican to say No to a potential customer, or anyone else, for that matter. However, other potential customers may turn around, walk out and never return; thereby putting him out of business. Now, who caused the closing of that restaurant? The dog, the smoker, those who never returned? It seems that the answer is easy.

Good to have you back, RVGRINGO !!

Thanks, Tom. with strong glasses, a magnifying glass, the Mac Speech function and one partially usefull eye, I enjoy getting back on the computer for part of each day. Now, I just have to learn how and when to eat again without most of my colon. Do they still call these The Golden Years? (I would have put that in quotation marks, but without depth perception, I spilled liquid on that side of the keyboard! No more apostrophes either and all shifting is now done from the left.) Obviously, I now have to be driven and I really did like driving in the mountains. Oh well!

Who, me? I've never been there. It should be easy enough to find out if you want to call & ask. I don't care either way.

If you don't care either way, why would you bother posting about a restaurant you've never been to? My guess is, until proven otherwise, that this is another dog-kennel friendly environment.

To dog or not to dog....this is a question? Look, I've come to have peace with dogs in restaurants that are basically outdoors. I'm a cat person so any peace I make with a dog is a good one. La Jardin has dogs all over it, as does Black Coffee, I've has dogs at Roberto's (some of my best friends bring them). If Poochy is well behaved and doesn't pee on the chairs (yes, I saw that at one place), and sits quietly under the table, who cares? No, I don't really want to share my table top with Poochy"s snout.

I'm more interested in the food. What do we have on this thread about the food at Ancla? I mean wasn't that what this was all about?

If your dog is interfering with me and my enjoyment, I will express the same disdain as a whining, crying baby or child, either the responsible "parent" handles it, or I may speak to the management (but you've really got to tick me off to get me to do that!) or the next time, I'll look into see if the same annoying dog (or kid of selfish parents) is there, and choose another place.

Now.....what about the food and prices at Ancla, huh?
