gringal Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Four of us tried the new Lety's for the first time. Never been to the old one. Nice decor; nothing special. Sticky oilcloth tablecloths. Tiny paper napkins (2) in holder. No salt and pepper. No table settings. Ordered guacamole for all of us. Came with the big crisps. Good guacamole; good crisps. However, no utensils whatsoever. Server disappeared. At the time of ordering guacamole, we had also put in our lunch orders; two of shrimp a la plancha, two of spicier shrimp. Time passed. Lots of time. This is when there were very few other diners and plenty of kitchen staff. About 50 minutes later, the plates arrived. They ranged from lukewarm shrimp, rice and veggies to downright cold (mine). The shrimp was okay. No better than a number of other local restaurants. $110 pesos per plate. The meals came with a basket of dry, stale tasting bread. No spread. Nobody ate the bread. Iced tea was ordered "sin azucar". It came sweetened. The server said that it was unsweetened. No refills were offered during the meal when the glass was empty. No water served. No server came during the meal to ask if everything was okay. In fact, server stayed out of sight. Finally peeked out long enough that we could signal for the check. Sorry to say all this, since I'd heard so many good things about the food in the old place. "Will we be back?" is the question. No, unless we hear some really positive reviews indicating that they get their act together in the future. I could see no excuse for what happened.
JRPJR Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Thanks for the objective and detailed review. Guess I'll wait a while before trying it.
Mainecoons Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Was this a problem with the server or the kitchen? We went shortly after they reopened and didn't have problems like this. Sorry to hear it.
gringal Posted April 4, 2013 Author Report Posted April 4, 2013 Was this a problem with the server or the kitchen? We went shortly after they reopened and didn't have problems like this. Sorry to hear it. Truthfully, I have no idea. Maybe both, since the server wasn't exactly doing her job and for all we knew, our food had been prepared and just sat there by the kitchen all that time, getting cold. One diner arrived after we did, sat at a table near us and was served long before we were. In fact, he finished his meal, paid and left before we got ours. It really is too bad, since they had a good rep.
Joyfull Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 We use to go to the old Lety's and it was always hit or miss. When the old restaurant was torn down some friends asked us to go to Marisco Peters in west Ajijic adjacent to La Huerta Evento where the organic market is held on Tuesdays. Food is similar, but much better IMHO. Great Camarones Zarandeado and Fillet Almondine. Dishes are served with rice and salad which I prefer over Lety's veggies which are over cooked. Prices are about the same.
JayBearII Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 On the other hand, the only time I went to Marisco Peter's the veggies were all served cold, including the mashed potatoes, and the fish was nothing to write home about, and service was poor, so I have not been back. I have never been at Lety's when the manager/chef/owner (I forget his actual name, altho I shouldn't!) is NOT around. I bet that was the problem. Most restaurants here seem to depend on the presence of the head chef, and everyone else acts like they have never been in a restaurant before and have no idea what is expected of them, which is probably the case! Decor was never a strong point at Lety's, but I loved the food, including the rice and cooked veggies. When I lived in Chula Vista, we got carryout from Lety's about once a week and were never disappointed, altho you do have to know what to order. If there is a special fish available, it will be posted, and is worth trying. I also like the coconut shrimp with the mango salsa, to which I used to be addicted. It is a heavily breaded style, which someone posted they do not like--tastes differ. BTW, ordering guacamole, which is made fresh for you, is a good way to stave off hunger until your entree arrives.
FHBOY Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 As a newbie, I'll double down on Marisco Peters. Now if I can only get used to eating dinner at 4:30 that has to end before 6:30. Would had never stopped at he place if our gracious hosts had not suggested it. We will be back there, you betcha'! Funny, back in NY, out on Long Island, our favorite seafood place was also Peter's (Clam bar) in Island Park.
gringal Posted April 4, 2013 Author Report Posted April 4, 2013 Well, JayBearII.....I believe the owner was there. Big guy, gray hair, belly? A man answering that description was there when we came in, anyway. Maybe he didn't stick around.
shirlppt Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 We went to the new Letys for the first time on Good Friday. The street below the restaurant towards the lake was blocked off, about 1 pm. Letys seemed ready for a crowd. We ordered breaded butterfly shrimp and I ordered shrimp, tempura with mango sauce. I don't often say this, but it was the best shrimp,I had ever eaten. By the time we left, the place was packed, mostly Mexican families. The service was typical of what we experience down here but when we asked for something, we got it right away. I forgot my sunglasses on the table and someone came running after me with them. We will go back again and see if we have a different experience.
Shelley Ronnfeldt Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 We went to the old Lety's many times, and went to the new location tonight. Same prices, same fabulous shrimp. It was a great experience, and we'll be back. We ordered our old faves - breaded fried shrimp and coconut shrimp with mango sauce. Very good, and good service.
hensley Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 We went last Saturday and everything was really good and they were pretty busy. They have a new margarita special and they were really great.
ajijicis4me Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 We went last Saturday and everything was really good and they were pretty busy. They have a new margarita special and they were really great. What did you order? Prices?
hensley Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 We ordered Garlic shrimp and Coconut Shrimp $100p and $110p I think and the large margaritas were $35p.
Mainecoons Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 Had breaded shrimp at Lety's for dinner yesterday. Absolutely delicious as always, attentive service, everything just fine at Lety's!
ChrisB Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 ditto! same old quality - fried fish and tuna veracruz
liquipure Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 Here is a positive vote and we were there last night. 5 people. We had the special margaritas and some of us had a second! Good. We all cleaned our plates. A summary of what we ordered. Shrimp tempura w/ mango salsa, shrimp zarandeanous 9sp?), 2 orders of Cordon blue and a shrimp burger. oh and a veggie quesdillas to share. All good. Some asked for FF instead of rice and veggies. And for the light eaters, you can get 1/2 order of shrimp ANY TYPE, which for me is great. We always go back.
Fox Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 Went to the old Lety's twice. First time very good, second time the Coconut batter was so THICK and SWEET, you couldn't even taste the shrimp! We won't be back.
