JayBearII Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 A tip on canned beans: rinse them with cold water before using. Gets rid of most of the gas--you'll see the bubbles and be amazed.
ajijicer Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 I ussally soak the beans overnight before using to remove gas. Soaking dry beans also speeds up cooking time For a real treat, fresh garbanzo beans are avaialble locally, A pain to shell, but once you;ve had hummus from fresh beans. it will never be the same.
Studio del Sol Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 There are nine. Apparently adults don't need the growth amino acid, histidine. Kids do. Histidine (His) - the 'growth amino' essential for young children. Lack of histidine is associated with impaired speech and growth. Abundant in spirulina, seaweed, sesame, soy, rice and legumes.

virgogirl Posted January 14, 2012 Report Posted January 14, 2012 I also read that current research, PurplePatty. I also want to mention that in a former post on this topic I mentioned a great Veg. restaurant called El Jardin. It is 1/2 block PAST Enrique Diaz de Leon on La Paz. Don't want to give anyone a bum steer. You will see on the sun shade that extends over the sidewalk the words PAN INTEGRAL. That is the place in Gdl. i MENTIONED WITH GOOD WHOLE GRAIN BAKERY, GROCERY ITEMS AND A BUFFET.
lakeheron Posted January 14, 2012 Author Report Posted January 14, 2012 So, I started drinking rice milk instead of cow's milk when I started this a few months ago. No problem, tastes good etc. However! The only place I can find to buy it (besides Oso Cremeria in Joco, which was out of it last week) is SL. When I first bought it at Sl it was 20 something pesos. Then soon went up to 30 something. Yesterday rice milk was 44 pesos plus change! Anybody know anyplace else where one can buy rice milk? I remember seeing either almond milk or rice milk by the carton at Costco. Can't remember which.

MaryPat Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 Here is my sister's website. She is a certified nutritionist living in Chicago. She follows a raw diet but also ascribes to not eating anything that has a face or a mother. Some interesting recipes on her website. She visited me here in PV in January and we really cooked up some delicious meatless dinners. Check her out: http://www.foodnotmeds.com/

gary c. Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 We ate today - for the first time - at Que Taco. I can wholeheartedly recommend that you go there and order either the Globo Vegetarian or the Vegetables Brochette. To start they served raw vegetables with a great mustard dip. Then the meals came. Delicious. If you don't want cheese, be sure to tell them that, since the Globo had cheese in it. This is a restaurant on the road from Ajijic to Joco. It's on the left side going to Joco. Parking looks like it is going to be tough, but just pull in right in front of the restaurant. The topes makes the traffic coming in or going out easy to get around. Carol

Bourbonman Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 Great topic I have not eaten anything with a face or mother in 25 yrs. I am surprised no one mentioned Lentils. My Mexcian wife prepares once a week, and is very delicious(great source of protein). I eat a lot of veggies, fruit, & nuts, grain breads, soya milk. I do eat some Cotija queso. My wife makes a lot of water drinks flavored with fruits, etc. I love alfalfa aqua Have no problem with weight or energy. All vital signs are good. flavor my coffee with natural brown sugar. Never desire meat. No more polyps in my colonoscopy exams, I stopped eating meat and poultry after learning about all of the medicines. steroids, etc given, and learning that these pass thru to me. It is a great life , to go to the markets and have all of the healthy foods available, and to feel that I am taking care of the only body that I will ever have . PS- I am 77 and expecting another 20 .and a cancer survivor.
bennie Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 lentils are the fastest beans to cook. the light orange ones are even faster then the brown, but they dont sell them here.
lakeheron Posted February 26, 2013 Author Report Posted February 26, 2013 Super Lake sometimes has them for top dollar.

bdmowers Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 Humans are omnivores. Meat (protein) from some source is an important part of the diet as our bodies cannot make some of the proteins we need. Anytime you switch to a meatless diet, you need to be careful. Many sources of protein are not complete proteins. For instance, beans are not a complete protein, but if you include brown rice with the beans, you have a complete protein. What I was told by a nutritionist is that your body needs the complete protein at one time. You cannot eat beans for breakfast and rice for dinner and expect it to work. As someone else mentioned, you cannot get the fats to feed your brain from veggies alone. One source I read said you can take supplements of salmon oil, another source said not so good if the oil is processed. There is a great deal of recent research done on this. Much of it shows that vegetable sources have more complete proteins that originally thought. Some show beans themselves are a complete protein. Many other vegetable sources are complete proteins. Many, many more will provide complete protein when eaten together ("complementary proteins"). Certainly, it is no longer thought that you must consume all parts of the complete protein spectrum at one sitting. Sometime during the day is fine. Grains like quinoa (get it at Superlake and the Grainery) are a complete protein plus it is high in minerals and B vitamins, is cholesterol-free and high fiber. According to easily available research, the idea that vegetarians can't get their full protein needs is simply incorrect.

Blend on high for 2 minutes. Strain through small-holed metal collander (or cloth for thinner consistency). You can then add 12 dates or a tablespoon honey for sweetness and continue to blend for a minute or so. Almonds are a high-nutrition food, especially in minerals and they are high alkaline.
bennie Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 thanks lakeheron, the orange lentils must sell out fast. after 10 years, i havent seen them. they dont have them @ graneria either. bdmowers, dont you have to boil the almonds first? wont raw almonds break the blender? trailrunner, the rice milk was 25 pesos last time i was in superlake. that was 2 weeks ago. they have the kirkland brand, which is very good.
