El Toro Furioso Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 We all know that lots of changes are taking place for expats who have US state plated cars in Mexico. We also know, at best, that those who can register their 8- to 10-year-old NAFTA-built car in Jalisco (or whatever Mex. state) will have to start paying Mexican insurance rates that are about double what they pay now as "tourists." BUT...I have a dual citizenship Mexican/US friend who owns a Texas-plated vehicle that is about to turn 10 years old and that she would like to register in Jalisco. She brought the car into Mexico showing her US passport. She bought Mexican insurance in Texas and has done so for a number of years. Is there a process by which she can register this car as Jaliscan as a Mexican citizen? If so, where should she go? What should she do? Thanks for any help with this different twist on a quite current topic.
JerryS Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 I never paid double for insurance on a Mexican plated car.
hensley Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 We had a 2007 new Toyota truck US plated and paid $350 USD a year, now we have a 2006 minivan MX plated and pay $8,000p a year. Yes it is double.

johanson Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 Over the years I have always heard the cost for insurance on a Mexican plated car was about twice that of the same car with US plates. I sure hope that isn't true anymore as soon I may be required to drive a Mexican plated car.

JerryS Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 When buying insurance for a Mexican plated car. You need to shop around for price.
Intercasa Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 Sounds high, Lewis and Lewis $428 for full coverage annually for foreign plated car. My 2011 VW Mx plated runs $7,700 pesos or $600US and includes coverage in the US.
lakeside7 Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 When buying insurance for a Mexican plated car. You need to shop around for price. Most of the agents have limited access to the same insurance company's, so whichever agent you use the premium will be "the same " Difference in price is when for example when you take a bigger deductible etc..I would be aware of any agent that offered a "cut price" deal When you are compare the same coverage with different carriers there will be minimal difference in premium. No big discounts for no claims etc. Excuse made is that parts are getting more expensive!!
conejorapido Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 When discussing the price of auto insurance, the premium is meaningless without knowing what the coverage is. Take a higher deductible, price goes down. Add more Liability, price goes up. There is just no way to make an accurate comparison without knowing the what's covered and at what level. And, also what is not covered.
johanson Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 Come on guys an agent represents one company and he is an agent for that company. What you want is a broker who can choose amongst all or many of the companies. One such brokerage .is Parker Insurance near the animal shelter. I am sure there are other brokerage offices as well. Most every year when it's time to renew they offer me various options one of which they recommend over the others.
