I love it too but don't remember seeing any here. They're not difficult to make from scratch but also Bisquick can be used to make them & they're pretty good even if Bisquick is expensive here at Super Lake.

My kitchen.

Address please :)

Often down here I just get a craving for something I can't get here. Last week it was Salt Water Taffy after watching the show Boardwalk Empire.

Super Lake had Oscar Meyer beef bologna. It was REALLY pricey but I bought it anyway. Finished off 2 packs in a week. They had Oscar Meyer regular style which I think they still have. The beef might be gone now.

I tried coffee cake in USA and loved it, do you know where I can find good coffecake in the area?

Look into Superlake, by the bread section.

Speaking of cravings, checked out Miracle Whip light at Walmart yesterday, craftily no price listed, and the price was 172 pesos!

Coffee cake is easy to make from scratch; lots of recipes online.

I'm curious: where do Mexicans shop to get their dairy items, eggs, etc.? Or staples like flour and other baking goods.

I've mostly shopped SuperLake and Walmart on my trips to Lakeside; did one shopping trip to Soriana.

My maid says she shops at Soriana (she lives in Chapala down from CFE).

Thanks Carib, I´ll go check.

They've told me it's easy to make, and I've tried to do it myself but it just isn't the same...

WalMart has a selection of Mexican bolognas, over by the bakery in the "prepackaged meat/cheese" area. They are also carrying a new meat/cheese package: in a Tupperware-type container, you get sliced cheese and two kinds of lunchmeats, $40 pesos the container. Ham, things like that. Some meats definitely unrecognizable, but if bologna is considered a meat, then these should be okay...

This is really easy and does not require Bisquick. You can use dry buttermilk and water if you can't find liquid buttermilk.

Butter a 9" cake pan and preheat oven to 425F. Add some flour to the pan and shake it around so that the flour sticks to the sides and bottom and tap out the excess flour.

Combine 2c of sifted flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1c light brown sugar and 12 tablespoons of unsalted butter cut into bits. Rub the butter into the mixture with your fingers until the butter is like fine crumbs. Or you can cut the butter in with a two knives. Remove 1/2 c of this mixture and set aside.

Now stir in the buttermilk, one lightly beaten egg, 1t cinnamon, 1/2 c chopped walnuts or almonds and 1/2 c currents. When you have made a smooth batter, pour into the cake pan.

Sprinkle the saved 1/2 c of the flour mixture over the top of the batter.

Bake in the oven, reducing the heat to 375 after 15 minutes. Then bake another 20-25 minutes.

Serve warm or at room temp with some of Cafe Grano's finest.

They shop at the little abarrotes where the products are fresher, the cheese is often fresh not plastic, and the money goes back into the community. Both Chapala and Joco have indoor markets with amazing products plus Joco has Morelos street with dozens of little specialty shops. Maybe I pay a few pesos more but I get some good exercise and better quality food.
